Is there any way of removing this? It can't be dragged away with
"Customise".

What restart Thunderbird button?

Is it there after a restart?

In my testing of updating beta and nightly versions, I get a "Download
Update" prompt, click it and unlike Firefox which prompts to restart
immediately I don't see a "Restart" prompt for an hour.

Indeed.

The only place I see a "restart thunderbird" button is in the help/about
dialog when a update is ready, such as today with 78.8.0

There is a Restart Thunderbird button but only if you are using the
add-on Phoenity Buttons which I did install but then switched off.

So that's where it came from!

I was using Phoenity Buttons because I was interested in the "View as
HTML" button, which cycles through the options. I had to install that
separately as the Phoenity Buttons add-on for TB 78+ does not yet
include that button, and the dev has provided it as a separate add-on. I
added that, so have just now disabled the Phoenity Buttons add-on
itself, and that "Restart Thunderbird" button has disappeared. I'd
assumed it had come with TB78 for some reason! At the moment the
Phoenity Buttons are unmovable.

You may have been offered the update to 78.8.0 released on Tuesday.

Thunderbird 78.8.0 Release Notes.

Yes, they are annoyingly unmoveable so I decided to do without that add-on.

Phoenity Icons is a useful add-on, though, for me anyway.

I wanted to try the Phoenicity buttons but after downloading it I get a
message that it can't be installed because it hasn't been verified. How
do I get around that?

  1. Open the Add-ons manager from within Thunderbird using Tools > Add-ons.
  2. Click the gear wheel icon.
  3. Select "Install Add-on From File...".
  4. Navigate to where you downloaded the file.
  5. Install the extension.

Next time save steps and install from within Thunderbird.

It's definitely 78.7.1 and came through Mint's update manager (It's the
first time Mint has offered a 78+ version of TB ). I've no doubt that
78.8.0 will appear before too long.

Thanks. I'm a bit surprised that's not just 78.7.2.

THanks. No time now, but I'll try it in a little while.

I just did as you suggested. No error message this time, but I can't
find any additional Phoenicity buttons.

I found mine on the extreme right of the "Tab" bar, next to the
Hamburger icon. If you don't find yours there, it might be worth
temporarily checking all the View | Toolbars boxes, and see if they are
there.

OK, thanks. It's there, but it's a single button (Restart Thunderbird)
not buttonS. Shouldn't there be others?

Yes, but it's a bit convoluted to see them. With Phoenity Buttons
enabled, right click on, eg, the menu toolbar and choose "Customise".
You'll see an "Add-ons" icon (it looks like a piece of jigsaw). Drag
that to the menu toolbar and the other PB icons might appear to the
right of it. If not, try disabling and enabling PB again, or even
restarting TB. The "Restart Thunderbird" button seems to be there from
the start once PB has been enabled. Click on "Release Notes" for PB for
more info.

It seems to me that the PB add-on for TB78+ is still a work in progress.

OK, thanks again. That worked when I restarted Thunderbird. I now have
four new icons: Add-ons, Config, DevTools, Option.

They're of very minor usefulness.

The final line of every message tells you how to do that.
