I'm using an old version of Thunderbird (2.0.0.24), but hopefully this
question is general enough that it won't matter. Default browser is
Firefox 18.0.1. and the OS is Win7-32. I'm not sure if this is an OS
question or a Thunderbird question, but I'm starting here.

When I click a URL in a received email message, say from a friend, or
from ebay, or if I click a link in a message I've already sent, the
browser has to be already open for the web page to be brought up. In
other words, Thunderbird at the moment has no ability to launch the
default browser.

I don't have URL mailto protocol set up for this computer so any email
link oin a browser will not launch T-bird, but while it's possible my
memory is playing tricks on me, during the six months I've been using
this computer I've launched the browser from T-bird many times, so this
is a recent problem, which would rule out mailto being part of the
problem, I think.

So is there anything going on in T-bird that might be responsible for this?

Seems to work OK in safe mode, and also in normal mode since I switched
back, so maybe things are OK, at least for now.

If the problem persists, check in your Computer > Options if Firefox is
set as the default handler for HTML files. The problem is more likely to
be with Windows than with TB.
