I have been noticing that Thunderbird seems to be slow in bringing up
addresses, when typing one in the "To" field and letting Thunderbird
suggest which address to use, ie: I type in my brother's first name and
Thunderbird brings up the full name and email address and inserts it
into the "To" field. I am using Thunderbird 2.0 alpha, but this was
also happening in Thunderbird 1.5. I have two address books, one for
personal and one for an email newsletter I send out. The address book
for the newsletter has almost 300 contacts in it. Could that be causing
the slow response? Thunderbird used to bring the name and address up
almost instantly. This only seems to affect the first name I type in.
If I need to put another name in the next "To" field, it acts normal.

I dont think the number (of contacts) affects the speed to any
discernable degree

I hope you are using different profiles for Thunderbird 2.0a and
Thunderbird 1.5

Test:
Create a new profile for one of the two versions.
Copy over the address book or books into the new profile
Still having the same problem?

As far as the different profiles go, no. I am using the same one. I
haven't had any problems with it yet. The problem I am experiencing was
happening before I installed 2.0a. I will try a new profile and post back.

Okay, okay. I created a new profile for Thunderbird 2.0a and the slow
address problem seems to have been corrected. It also has corrected a
few toolbar spacing problems I was running into. (Ducking and running
for cover.) ;) Lesson #1---create new profile for new version. Thanks
for the help, Champ.

Amazing, utterly amazing.
You havent had any problems with it yet? Then what is this thread all
about if not a problem?

If you are going to be using two DIFFERENT versions, then yes, use a
seperate profile for each. If you switch to a NEW version, this step is
not required, you can contunue using the same profile in the new version
- just as long as you dont go back to the old version with it.

Just for the record, I wasn't using two different versions. I was using
2.0a, but the problem I mentioned above was happening before I
downloaded and installed 2.0a.

I'm on 1.5 and it's slow, especially when you have a lot of addresses
and mailing lists (and the address list keeps getting larger if TBird is
told to automatically save addresses of people one corresponds with). I
have found, however, that a work around is to either use tab (not Enter)
to leave the TO field, or to simply type all of the addresses in on one
line, separated by commas. Both perform faster.

I think this is an area which could be optimized. Outlook does
autocomplete lookups instantaneously, but unlike TBird, doesn't make it
easy for users to manage their autocomplete address book.
