Is there a way yet to use the PDF menu in the Mac OS X print dialog
with Thunderbird? I want to be able to print to PDF and have
Thunderbird create a new mail message with the PDF attached.

This is the one feature of Mail.app that I miss the most since
switching to Thunderbird.

The "Save to PDF" feature is available in the Print dialog on
Thunderbird. I think you'll need to attach the PDF to a message
yourself. (drag it into the message compose window
)

Is this something unique to the Mac version of TB because there is no
"Save to PDF" in my PC version - latest. Clicking on "Print" prints to
the default printer, no dialog appears, it just prints. Not in "print
preview" either.

Nevermind, I see in File => Print Options the ability to enable/disable
the print dialog. However, there still is no "Save to PDF" in this
dialog. But I CAN print to PDF from the printer selection drop-down list.

It is a feature of Mac OS X. You can save anything you print from any
program as a PDF.

I guess technically the question is: Is there a way for Thunderbird to
recognize documents that are passed to it by the Mac OS, such as by
dropping a document on the Dock icon or being called from the PDF
Services items, so that Thunderbird will create a new message
automatically with the attached doc?

Apple's Mail.app and Microsoft Entourage both do this, but as far as I
can see Thunderbird does not and it drives me nuts. It's so much
easier to use the PDF Services menu to "print" a document directly
into a new email message that pops up than it is to save the PDF to
disk, switching to the mail program, creating a new message, and then
finding the file to attach. If there's a solution to make this work
like the other programs I'd be grateful.

Hummm.
Windows has that feature in the context menu of the file manager
(Windows Explorer). Just select the file (or files), right-click, and
the context menu will have a 'send to' with 'Mail Recipient' being one
of the items. It requires having set up your default email application
in the OS, but it will call that email application, and pass the file to it.
You might try the Mac equivalent operation...

I have tried using the Mac OS X conventions. You should be able to
drop a document on the TB application, either in the Finder window or
in the Dock. However, TB does not accept a dropped item. Also, you
should be able to put an alias of Thunderbird into the /Library/PDF
Services/ folder and push a PDF directly from the print dialog into a
new message, but that doesn't work either.

He is trying the Mac equivalent and it isn't working. When I follow the
same procedure he used, the PDF is attached to a new message using Mail
even though Thunderbird is my default email program.

The problem is probably related to this long standing bug that now has a
patch that is still not integrated into Thunderbird.
Bug 287345 - Can't add attachment using Mac OS X "open -a" command

That would explain it - thanks Larry. I guess I'll have to just keep
waiting until hopefully this gets integrated. It's the one shortcoming
of TB that costs me time nearly every day.

I can do basically the same thing by printing to the "pdf printer" which
actually saves it as .PDF .. was just wondering why it wasn't an option
in the body of the dialog.
