I am running Thunderbird 3.1.4 and Lightning 1.0
Within the last couple of months this problem began. Certain calendar
appointment reminders I cannot "snooze" or "dismiss," and in fact I
cannot even delete. I suspect these are Outlook calendar items that I
"accepted."

Are you actively syncing Lighting with Outlook?

You should try asking in mozilla.support.calendar, where calendar
questions should go.

Chris, I tried that with my Lightning/Google questions and got very few
responses (1 or 2), neither of which was helpful. It seems to me that
the calendar gurus do not frequent that group!

They're there.
Are they hiding? Was my question too stupid to answer?

I don't know about your question, but just because you didn't get a
helpful response doesn't mean that calendar support volunteers are not
there answering other peoples questions. Most of all, that is where
calendar questions /should/ go.
Just an fyi, I had the same problems when I accepted events from folks who sent it out from their novell calendars.
