Can this be done? I have tried in Notepad with no success. I
can open the file, make changes, and save, but when I look
at the filters through TB, none of the changes are visible.

What you are trying to modify?
Why are you not doing it from filter manager UI?

There are some blocks of filters I want to reorder, and it
seems to me to be easier to cut and paste them in a text
file. I also want to copy some filters that have a lot of
entries (and use the entries for another filter purpose)
which cannot be done in the filter manager.

You ( Braun ) know that Thunder·Bird must be closed
when you manually edit filters via a text editor... right ?

You must save the file before re·lauching Thunder·Bird.

This is poor design, in my opinion,
Thunder·Bird shouldn't have to be closed like that.

Instead it should detect the “modified date” of the file and
automatically re·load it.

Fire·Fox has similar “bugs”;
Fire·Fox must be closed when userContent.CSS is saved.

By the way, Braun, please post a copy of your filter file.
What is the name of this file ?

Easy enough to do this through the UI => Tools => Message Filters =>
Select Filter => Edit => OK .. To reorder you can move UP or DOWN, your
choice.
