Does Thunderbird create a log file of all received/sent email?
I sometimes wonder if I've lost received mail and it would be nice to be
able to check exactly which messages have been received recently.

I'm on Thunderbird 3.1.20 on a Mac PPC G4.

The closest you can do is log your filters. From the Tools menu, select Message Filters then click the "log file" in
the upper right hand corner. If you are not already logging filters, you can check the box to start. After some mail
has come in, you can recheck the log to see where it was filtered.

Haven't tried it myself, but there are some instructions here:

Thunderbird has an activity manager, that logs what you do and mailbox
updates. Go to Tools-->Activity_Manager.

Chris,
How do you activate the Activity Manager? I popped it open but the screen is blank with no options other than "clear
list" and nothing in the box above it.

It doesn't need to be activated.

This is closer to what I'm looking for except for two problems:

1) you have to start the process every time you run TB. I want TB to log
automatically (and possibly also delete old logs automatically as well).

2) it logs lots and lots of very geeky (and useless for me) information
which i have to sift through in order to get to what interests me.

I really just need a list of each downloaded message/deleted from server
message with each line containing time/date, subject and who sent it
-one line per message info, something like this:

06082012 11:02:58 "Re: how are you?" from Uncle Bob <uncl...@bob.org>
06082012 13:43:15 "This is a test" from John Doe <jo...@doe.com>
06082012 13:48:44 "Make $$$" from CashPrize <cash...@hotmail.com>

That way I can easily see if I ever received the message or not.

I tried the "Activity manager" (Tools-Activity manager) but it only
gives very general info ("2 messages downloaded" etc.) and only for the
current session.

Log filters (Tools-Message filters-Filter log) is nice for messages
going astray because of wrong filter setups, but doesn't help me figure
out if a message has been downloaded or deleted from the server.
