I was just looking in the Thunderbird settings panel,
Options / Advanced / Network & Disk Space,
in the "Disk Space" section, where it says
"Use up to [XXX] MB of space for the cache [clear Now]".
What does "the cache" mean in this context? And what
happens if I click "Clear Now"? Will that wipe out
all "cached" (locally-stored) emails on all accounts?
Or does "cache" mean something else in this context,
and if so, what?

Finally, a way to delete unwanted postings ;-)

There seems to have been a recent discussion,
right in this newsgroup, started by:

Date: Wed, 04 Aug 2010 16:16:15 -0700
From: John Corliss
Newsgroups: mozilla.support.thunderbird
Subject: Cache? Vast ist this "Cache" in Thunderbird?

http://groups.google.com/group/mozilla.support.thunderbird/browse_thread/thread/fec30486e858b166

To see the cache contents display as suggested by "JoeS"
(or any "Thunderbird Start Page")
the "message preview pane" must be visible.

That doesn't work with my linux setup...
One needs to restart Tbird to do this, correct?
Regardless, nothing comes up either way.

The ViewAbout add-on gives easy access to various about: commands,
including about:cache.

When I do what "JoeS" suggests in
http://groups.google.com/group/mozilla.support.thunderbird/msg/d31be9dbade262d3

That is, set Tools > Options > General > [Thunderbird Start Page] Location

to the value about:cache?device=disk

and then invoke (menu) "Go" > "Mail Start Page" (no restart needed),
I then see the cache displayed in the "message" [preview] area.

Before setting the new "start page" value,
I had seen the original default (web) "start page" sometimes show up at launch,
if this "General" option was set, and if I had left the message area visible:
[x] When Thunderbird launches, show the Start Page in the message area

I got all this info from the posted thread, so I don kno no mo :)

Are you a Connecticut Yankee?

Which one -- the restaurant in San Francisco,
the decommissioned nuclear power plant,
or the one in King Arthur's Court?

fact.

the one in King Arthur's Court - came to mind when I wound up in lala
land...

Did you happen to notice all the certificate info within that cache?

For those people using ThunderBrowse, you can just enter that into the
address bar (or click on your link).

I didn't look. Caching certificates would seem normal;
is something of more value to be made of it?

I don't see the thread now so maybe I am thinking of another poster.

There seems to be no "Accept" or "Make exception"
for an NNTP server (with SSL) having a certificate
that isn't identical to its actual name,
whereas necessary "Exceptions" can be made (I hope)
for the same thing in regard to mail servers,
and web servers (in Firefox, for example).

That must not be a cache problem, but a problem of
an incomplete user interface -- all the internal tools
exist to complete the interface, but have not been invoked
where needed, like a section of a house that doesn't have
all its plumbing connected -- in the very building I work in,
in fact, bathrooms at one end continue to have running hot water,
while suddenly nothing comes out of the "hot" faucets at the other end.

I put this on the "to fix" list at our Facilities Maintenance web site,
but I think that they have changed its category to "enhancement" ;)
