I notice that Thunderbird/38.5.0 is now available from
<https://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/thunderbird/>. Is this ready for
end-users? I ask because I saw no announcement.

I expected a notice in one or more of the news.mozilla.org newsgroups,
specifically mozilla.support.thunderbird plus possibly mozilla.general
and mozilla.announce.

Note that, in order to prevent disruption of time-critical tasks I might
be performing, I have disabled automatic updates to my software (even
updates to Windows 7). Instead, I download installer files when I am
not doing any time-critical tasks and install them when not performing
any other tasks. Also, I maintain my wife's PC along with my own. I
much prefer to download once and install twice instead of downloading
the same installer file twice.

One way to check if a new version is released is to go to
<https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/>. When you mouse over the
download button, the destination link should tell you which version it is.

This newsgroup is for support, not announcements. If someone wants to
announce it here, that's fine, but don't expect it here. I think I've
already explained that to you before.

Another option might be to manually check for updates, by going to the
'About Thunderbird' window.

And in using it today, an early Christmas present: the 'write' pane
now launches the Contacts sidebar as "Personal Address Book" rather
than "All".

I was also surprised and pleased to return to normalcy.

Thank you Thunderbird..

I haven't updated yet, but if what you say is true, that's a BIG
improvement over the previous version!

I'd prefer it to open on an address book I specify. I have 11 address
books, one of which is (obviously) the most used one. the other are for
(usually very) occasional use.

Have a good day,

I thought the fix made it open to the last selected one - which should
provide mostly what you want...

Wolf,

What are you doing when you open an address book? I rarely open my
Address Book, apart from when undertaking maintenance. OK, I might use
it now and again to find a street address or phone number (in which
case, searching the entire Address Book via All Address Books is a
welcome enhancement.) But to address an email message, I just start
typing names or addresses and autocomplete does the rest. I'm curious as
to what value folk get from scratching about in the Address Book for
themselves.

And of course, with autocomplete doing the work, the precise location of
a Contact becomes somewhat irrelevant and the concept of a "default"
address book just doesn't make any sense.

I gather many users do need to see lists to prompt them. This is a Use
Case that just doesn't crop up in my own use of email. I /know/ whom I'm
writing to. But I never need (nor choose?) to write to long lists of
correspondents.

When I'm sending an email to a large group it's more efficient to choose
them in the address book. And I do this frequently.

Evening news is where they begin with 'Good evening', and then proceed
to tell you why it isn't.

Selecting a bunch of addresses, then Write. I don't do that very often,
though. I usually only write to 1, 2, or 3 people, and selecting from
the choices offered when you type the first letter or two is fast enough
for that.

Shifting the topic bit: I find TB's method of creating mailing lists
rather, um, clumsy, let's say. What I'd like is to create an "address
book", and then simply call it as a mailing list.

While I (and most everyone else I know) agree that the Address Book
needs a lot of work (mostly needing a rewrite to a sqlite or other db
backend first), using an AB as a list is not very efficient. The current
way allows one AB entry to be used in multiple lists.
