I've been getting the same thing since the last security
update. I haven't been able to receive my Hotmail messages
for some weeks now. The last time this happened was a few
years ago and I fixed it by adjusting the add-on settings.
This time the settings aren't making any difference. I
installed an update for the Hotmail add-on the other day
thinking that this must be a fix for this recent problem.
Unfortunately, nothing has changed! Still getting "negative
vibes".
BTW, I'm still using XP, so it probably isn't Vista related.

Hotmail extensions generally stops working after any significant changes
in hotmail service. Generally the author of that extension provides a
quick fix soon after the issue is reported.
Btw, hotmail now supports pop and smtp, i.e, you can download and send
mails by setting up a hotmail account in Tb with settings as suggested
here[1]. You no longer need that extension to access hotmail.
I second Nir's suggestion to ditch the webmail and hotmail
extensions for getting hotmail into Thunderbird. Much easier to
work with.

Thank you both. This is great! I wasn't aware of those
changes. I will insert a new account now.
The server is pop3.live com at port 995.
Use your full email address for username (E.g., xx...@msn.com).
Check SSL under Use Secure Connection
You don't need to check Use Secure Authentication.
If you also want to use a outgoing server (SMTP server):
Server name is smtp.live.com on port 25.
Check to use name & password for Security & Authentication.
Use your full userid as above.
Check TLS, if available.
Great tip, thanks. Saved me a lot of grief!
