Old Gringo, its version 2.0.0.21. (I hope they did not flog you a
second-hand old version!)

Not so flawlessly here. Just like the last auto-update, TB couldn't touch
MapiProxy.dll or mozMapi.dll. I had to resort to downloading the latest
version for a manual update, and TB still got stuck at those files. They
aren't read-only. It was only after I rename them that the update was able
to proceed. It's the weirdest darn thing.

I got an error message about files that could not be loaded, but it
didn't specify what. When I started it again, it went through install
again, and seemed to complete o.k. Not noticing any problems, nor
anything new and exciting. Would frankly prefer these updates to be
optional, as for Firefox, but I was not given the option to choose to
not install this version. Or rather when I said "not now", it said
"O.k., next time you restart Thunderbird then".

Tools, Options, Advanced, Update tab. You have yours set to auto

One thing I have noticed right away, it that when reading a thread in
USENET some of the posts use to open in a new window with a single
click. That seems to be gone. ?? And by the way this is not a quiz

Thanks, Terry, been through that list before, the last time I updated TB.
None of the possible causes detailed fit my configuration.

It baffles science.

In case others have a similar experience, I report mine:

I was running 2.0.0.19 when TB attempted a 'partial' update to 2.0.0.21.
After re-starting TB, I got the message that certain files could not
be updated, and this repeated every time I re-started TB, or selected
the option in the Help menu to install the downloaded update.

I renamed MapiProxy.dll and mozMapi32.dll, and again clicked on the Help
menu option. This time the message stated that the partial upload could
not be installed, and then the complete latest version (8+ Mb) was
downloaded. This installed OK on re-start.

I do not have a webcam of any sort. There was no previous prompt to
update to 2.0.0.20. The Help menu option has reverted to 'Check for
Updates'.

I believe you can find that information in the release notes, but then
you KNOW that. Some of us believe that changes are for the better, even
if they aren't always that way. It's called optimism. Others seem to
think the program is as good as it can get, so they don't update. It's
all good.

It kind of went like this: ">> One thing I have noticed right away,
it that when reading a thread in
>> USENET some of the posts use to open in a new window with a single
>> click. That seems to be gone. ??" I have no way of knowing if
it was a bug solved or not, as I found no info about this problem,
but on my end it seems to be gone and very steady at present. I also
notice that the connection to my server seems to be much better. All
I know is with each new version the ride seems to get a little
smoother. And now for your sarcastic attitude....................... !!!

Tbird update seems to be set to automatically update by default
but that can be changed in Tools-Options-Advanced-Update. I have
mine set to "Ask Me What I want to Do" when it finds an update.

Since Tbird 3.0+is in beta I suspect the majority of further
updates to TBird 2.0 are security updates.

Well, maybe they fixed something that was really bugging him... Hard to
say. Most of the time, I can't see any obvious changes. Doesn't mean
something critical to another user wasn't changed/fixed.

Just for the record:
Mozilla Thunderbird 2.0.0.21 has been released. Release notes are available. This post lists the improvements in Thunderbird 2.0.0.21 over 2.0.0.19. This list encompasses almost every single known fix that went into this release. Do check out the known
issues as well.

The Gecko 1.8.1.x branch (Thunderbird 2.0.0.x series) will not include any groundbreaking features that Gecko 1.9.x will bring, since it is based on Gecko 1.8.

Impact key for security issues listed on the Mozilla Foundation Security Advisories webpage:

* Critical: Vulnerability can be used to run attacker code and install software, requiring no user interaction beyond normal browsing.
* High: Vulnerability can be used to gather sensitive data from sites in other windows or inject data or code into those sites, requiring no more than normal browsing actions.
* Moderate: Vulnerabilities that would otherwise be High or Critical except they only work in uncommon non-default configurations or require the user to perform complicated and/or unlikely steps.
* Low: Minor security vulnerabilities such as Denial of Service attacks, minor data leaks, or spoofs. (Undetectable spoofs of SSL indicia would have “High” impact because those are generally used to steal sensitive data intended for other sites.)

Changes in 2.0.0.21: (6)

Security issues: (3)

* Fixed: MFSA 2009-07 - Crashes with evidence of memory corruption (rv:1.9.0.7) (Critical)
* Fixed: MFSA 2009-10 - Upgrade PNG library to fix memory safety hazards (Critical)
* Fixed: MFSA 2009-09 - XML data theft via RDFXMLDataSource and cross-domain redirect (Moderate)

Other fixes: (3)

* Fixed: 382349 - Unable to shift focus to the Message Body Pane with keyboard (F-6), a problem for blind Users.
* Fixed: 470185 - Update mail/ copyright dates to 2009
* Fixed: 473924 - thunderbird crashes when trying to open a base64 encode vcard [@ fakeCString]

Expectations for any substantial improvement in the 2.x.x.x series will not be realized.

As a matter of fact, sooner or later, you will probably be faced with a "major update" that you might not recognize.

The future is in TB3, so you might as well take a look at one of the betas now.

Open new messages in:

( ) A new message window (x) An existing message window

It sounds as if you might have had "new" checked in your older
version, but this version has "existing" checked. If so, try checking
"new" and see if that does what you're used to.

I have looked at the TB3b2 and find it not feature complete. That, and
loss of my extensions prevents me changing at this time as one of the
incomplete features is essential to the way I work. Looking forward to
a feature-complete version, soon.

Results may vary, but many extensions DO work. You just need to
override the version check.

The most controlled way to do this is one at a time, using nightly
tester tools extension

Prerelease questions are handled primarily in
mozilla.feedback.thunderbird.prerelease and you can find related

Doing/enabling *all*, especially if you have a many extensions, leaves
you vulnerable to unplanned problems. In addition, MR Tech Toolkit
itself doesn't keep up with Thunderbird versions. I have used MR Tech
successfully in the past, however I find NTT better to use, and less
cluttering, for daily use.

MR Tech Toolkit allows you to selectively make extensions compatible.
It's not all or nothing (though it may provide that option).

Also, I can't remember the last time it "didn't keep up"...

It is an impressive tool so my hats off to the author and those who use
it. I used it for quite a while myself. And If it allows selective
enabling so much the better.

Sorry. I don't mean function-wise, I mean the fact that it's Max version
lags at times for users of trunk builds.

2: I like the buttons above the view pane.
