I'm trying to setup my verizon email for the first time after a while.
The webmail works so I know the account is still active.

I can setup the account using IMAP and Oauth2 in TB78 and it will
receive all my mail.
But when I send, it keeps asking for the password.
The SMTP is not set for Oauth2. Should it be?
There is no option for Oauth2 in that field though. If Oauth2 is needed,
then Verizon/AOL is sending that setup page bad info so it won't let me
see Oauth2 in the dropdown.

I've got all my other accounts setup for Oauth2 and some have SMTP setup
as Oauth and I think it's Hotmail that does not use Oauth on SMTP but works.

Anyone else get Verizon to work.

Verizon mail? My account is POP3.

AOL mail? My account is IMAP and the Authentication method for the SMTP
server is OAuth2.

Both accounts set up using the account wizard and auto-discovery.

I guess this is like taking your car to the dealer to fix but the car works when you get there!

I played just a bit more. I found the setting that was off. When TB did the query to find setting for AOL/Verizon it returned the wrong
SMTP settings. Trial and lots of errors and logic and I found the correct one.

Sorry about the boy who cried wolf thing.

Thanks.
I found the issue early this AM. It kept me awake. LOL. My AOL has a
verizon.net extension so the wizard in TB does not work properly. It
gives me a SMTP of verizon.net. After much searching and a bit of
educated guess I changed the SMTP to smtp.aol.com and then the Oauth2
appeared as choice. TB would not give me a choice of Oauth2 with
verizon.net. I don't think it's TB's issue, I think it's the server
reporting back to TB and TB can only go by what it receives.

Anyway all is well and I'm making notes on the subject for future.

Glad you got it working,

I'm still lost. This is a Verizon or AOL account?

My AOL is imap.aol.com and my SMTP server for it is smtp.aol.com.

My AOL address is <username>@aol.com or I can also use <username>@aim.com.

Verizon POP3 is <username>@verizon.net.

Back in the days when Verizon did it's own thing, everything was verizon.net.
<name>@verizon.net pop.verizon.net smtp.verizon.net

Then they decided to push everything to AOL. It was simple and you retained your email and Thunderbird never knew the change. All the
settings were stil pop.verizon.net and smtp.verizon.net. I guess they just redirected all dns servers to the right place.
In 2019 I dropped Verizon. Personal decision and now use gmail or yahoo.

Still the emails at Verizon still work. Poor in house maintenance huh! And webmail still works, aol's web interface. But I'm still
<name>@verizon.net when I log into AOL.

But for IMAP on thunderbird it's screwed up. When you type in your email, the wizard tries to query "verizon.net" and get the suggested
settings. And they want pop3.
Google info tells you to manually config and say IMAP, it will not show Oauth2 on incoming server though and it wants imap.verizon.net. I
changed that to imap.aol.com and with a re-test now the Oauth2 shows up in the authentication drill down. But still no Oauth2 for smtp.
And smtp is still verizon.net.

As a stab in the dark I found I had to edit (post setup) the smtp to read smtp.aol.com (as you indicate) and then and only then I finally
got the Oauth2 available for smtp. And on the first send, I got the familiar popup from AOL to allow TB the Oauth2 login and to get the
new password for smtp.

So now it all works. I'm still <name>@verizon.net but it's all going through aol.com. And that's the part the eluded me. It finally
dawned on me that I had to point everything to *.aol.* stuff. I guess if I were still a Verizon customer I might have received an email?
Maybe?

Confusing huh?!!!

I was a Verizon customer for about 30 years. Dropped them for Comcast
several years ago. Both accounts are POP3.

Never received an email from Verizon about IMAP being available.
Wouldn't switch anyway.

My GMail and AOL accounts are IMAP.

Not sure I was told to change my verizon to IMAP or just assumed it should since it was AOL. But the 3 old emails I just resurrected seem
to work fine as POP. So I'm leaving it that way.
