Thanks for all replies. I now realize that I am in fact using an Add-on
that I must have started using years ago. It is "Remove Duplicate
Messages - 0.1.14" Last updated 15th Feb 2017.
Reading the reviews for this it seems that different people have
different experiences, some good some bad.
Having read the recent reviews I tried checking individual folders with
up to 50000 mails in each and this works OK.
However checking from the top level 'Local Folders' finds 261000 to
check and then appears to hang without showing any results.
I will stick to checking individual folders.
