I am in the process of upgrading from windows XP to Windows 7. In
XP I was using Thunderbird 8.0, Is there anyplace I can download
that and install in Windows 7?

I first downloaded thunderbird 10.0 But when I tried to copy my
profile from Thunderbird 8 in XP. It does not work correctly.
Never had a problem before. But I just can not seem to make it work
this time.

I have tried by letting thunderbird 10 create a default profile, then
copy over it, that did not work. Tried by deleting all files from
inside the profile default, and copying the ones from inside the
default profile from Thunderbird 8. That did not work either.

Please I need some help on how to move my profile from thunderbird 8
in XP to Windows 7 thunderbird 10.

Please

Thank you.

First let me give you the link to download TB 8.0 from the official link:

<ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/thunderbird/releases/8.0/win32/en-US/>

I hope this gives you a start but please always post a supplementary
question if you have one.

Good luck.

I just did this 2 weeks ago with 2 old XP PCs, migrating to 2 new Win 7
machines, each holding different TB e-mail accounts and e-mail archives.

It worked flawlessly with both using Mozbackup. I highly recommend this
very easy to use utility.

Is mozbackup available as a Thundebird addOn? Or is it its own application?

It's its own application and will backup both Firefox and Thunderbird.

Does it also move all the address books, I think I have 5 different
ones, or do I still need to export them? and then import them back on
the new setup.

Thanks

It is a stand-alone application and can be used to make backups for both
Thundebird and Firefox profiles. Backups can be password protected if
desired. You can customize which parts of the profile are backed up (by
cateogry, not obscure file name) and which folder the profile will be
deposited into. Backup files enable restoration of the backed up
profile with only 1 or 2 clicks.

Yes it imports address books along with bookmarks, add-ons etc. You can
select or de-deselect what you want to capture.

This should not be a matter of "version 8" vs. "version 10,"
but there are different paths for "Application Data"
on Windows XP vs. Windows 7, and for each individual user name.

On each of XP and Win7, log into Windows as the user who is going to run TB,
then use WindowsKey+R to open a "Run" dialog box.

Type or paste exactly the following into that box, on both XP and Win7:

%AppData%\Thunderbird

Upon opening this, you should be in a folder where you see
both file "profiles.ini" and subfolder "Profiles"

Unless your own profile is not under that subfolder,
copy both file "profiles.ini" and folder "Profiles"
and you should be done.

Although XP and Win7 have different paths to each user's
Application Data, the use of the symbolic path above
makes this find your own correct path on both XP and Win7.

Did you account for the different paths
for each user's Application Data, on each system?

A brand new profile, on either system,
would be created with a random string in its name,
and with "profiles.ini" specifying the final path to the
individual profile below the profile folder, including the random string.

If you copy both file "profiles.ini" and the "Profiles" subfolder
from one system to the other, then this would automatically maintain
profiles.ini in sync with the original profile name,
without having to go into any further details.

If you copied only the profile itself,
did you rename it to match the new profile's new (random) name,
or did you copy only the data under the profile directory,
to avoid renaming the profile directory itself?

So you may say, but I want to see video footage for proof :)

This makes three times that you have written a pair of statements like this:

(a) I tried to copy my profile.
(b) But it did not work.

How specific a solution do you expect anyone to give you
if that's as specific as you can get about what steps you actually performed
(e,g, even where are these profiles of yours?)
and then what specific results you actually got?

Do you expect a surgeon to be able to repair your broken bone
if all you can say is "I tried to have an X-ray taken,
but no one even knows where it went?"

At the last hospital I visited, any patient whose three-inch-thick chart binder
did not accompany him to every appointment with the next specialist
would be sent right back out the door to go get it
and bring it back with him next time,
not only to "hit the ground running" with all info needed to work with,
but also to avoid wasting the doctor's valuable time :)
