Adding new contacts to address book

I seem to recall that there was an option in OE that automatically added
new contacts to the address book when replying to a new email.
I'm aware that right-clicking a contact in a new email gives the option
of adding it to the address book, but can't find an option to do this
automatically by replying.
Am I missing something; if so, what?

This is a Thunderbird ng, not Micro$haft.

Are you referring to OE or TB?

There is an option in Preferences/Options - Composition section/
Addressing tab/ Check automatically add outgoing email addresses to my
(option) personal or collected addresses.

If you are replying to an email, then that address would be an outgoing
email address and if that option is checked (the default), the email
address would be added to your collected addresses.

Or, said another way, the default configuration would be to add the
reply address to your collected addresses. Changing from the default
would be to either add the address to your personal address book or
unchecking would not add any reply addresses (or any other outgoing
address) to either book.

I hesitate to add some of my confusion about defaults following, because
it isn't very important except to cause me to wonder if I'm
reading/interpreting a moz kb web page correctly about abook vs history
.mab/s.

I'm reading this page about about:config
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Mail_and_news_settings Mail and news settings

If one searches on collect, there are 4 entries on that page, and if I
search my about:config I get 2 hits on the collect term. I interpret my
own about:config as well as my pars above describing the default as
going into the history.mab which is known as the collected addresses and
not the abook.mab which is known as the personal addresses.

That is, my reading of the web page in the moz kb would seem to indicate
that the default for the collected addresses is the personal, not the
collected history.mab.

2 (of 4) 'collect' entries in the page cited above pasted below:

mail.collect_addressbook - String - Address book that collected
addresses should be added to. It defaults to
moz-abmdbdirectory://abook.mab (the personal address book).

mail.collect_email_address_outgoing Boolean - True: Add addresses from
outgoing messages - false (Default): Don't add addresses from outgoing
messages.

========

As I read what that seems to say, it seems to say to me that the
defaults are to not add addresses from outgoing messages and that
collected addresses should be added to the personal abook.mab, whehn I
believe my defaults are to add the outgoing messages and to add them to

Not that I want to talk about an OE configuration here, but the OP
lemel_man was using this configuration in OE to illustrate his question
about Tb:

OE/ Tools/ Options/ Send/ Check Automatically put people I reply to in
my Address Book.

> Are you referring to OE or TB?

He is referring to how to configure Tb to do what that setting does in OE.

You are right, of course, my wording was rather ambiguous; I rather
assumed that, since I'd posted on a TB ng that my question would be
interpreted as being about TB.
I was wrong, sorry.

Thanks Mike,
That answered my implied question completely.

That's what it says, but it's wrong, or more correctly, outdated,
and needs to be updated.

It defaults that way in my TB 1.5.0.14, but in my TB 17.0.5 it
defaults to moz-abmdbdirectory://history.mab (the collected addresses
book).

In both of my TBs that shows *user set* *false*, indicating that the
default is "true", and that that entry in that kb page also needs to
be updated/corrected.

Both of those preferences are linked to the

(Windows) Tools --> Options }
(Linux) Edit --> Preferences } --> Composition --> [addressing tab]
(Mac) Thunderbird --> Preferences }

[_] Automatically add outgoing e-mail addresses ...

option you had referred to in your prior post. That is, they can be
set in the UI, without having to use the Config Editor.

The other two "collect" entries you found in that kb page exist
in my TB 1.5.0.14, but not in my TB 17.0.5.

mail.collect_email_address_incoming
mail.collect_email_address_newsgroup

It would appear that they're capabilities that have been removed in
the interim.
