Hey Guys!

will Thunderbird 5 have "two line message list" like Outlook oder
Apple Mail? At this point the development stopped a long time ago. MS
has introduced the two line message list in Office 2003, which was
released 8 years (!!!) ago.
In the time of widescreen display it is necessary to have a good three
column view. It doesn't have to be the standard view. It can be
optional. But it should be there.

Not sure what kind of view you are looking for.
View>>Layout>>Vertical gives 3 top to bottom panels.
There are some nice additional layouts here:

you may be correct but that link is as clear as mud, as is the OP's
original question.

Yes, the OP seems to make two points, the later related to the
former. He mentions Outlook, so it is not that hard to find out
(Googling):

| Folder pane | Message list pane | Message preview pane |

+-------------+-------------------+----------------------+

If the message list pane is shrunken in width to leave more space
for the message preview, the current Thunderbird message list
presentation becomes not appropriate to have such main window
horizontal layout.

If that is the original poster question as in the Multiline-layout.html;
I hope that TB does not adapt that as standard as it takes up too much
space and offers nothing.

It appears to be just an option in case one wants the view laid out
only in vertical columns spread horizontally. In this case I think
the multiline-item message list view is much better. I've just
observed Thunderbird has a "Vertical View" but it is pretty much
unusable in the current "fixed" state of the message list.

I don't think so. Presenting single messages in an outlook-like
messagelist is clearly not the same as presenting multiple messages in a
google-like conversation view.

I've never seen the purpose of that feature in applications that have
it, and always turn it off when possible. What good does it do to see:

Some Subject Line
Hey, John

it doesn't provide any more info than just "Some Subject Line" by
itself.

I would prefer

or

Subject line | Date | Attachment icon or flag
Sender or people in the conversation

Also, in Outlook, if you don't like the preview on the third line, you can't just switch to two lines mode.
