I have tried import photos from Thunderbird to My Pictures so I could
use them as desktop images, but they never actually become thumbnails
in the MY Picture gallery that allows me to set images to the
desktop.

How to solve?

Thanks!

you can not really 'import from thunderbird'.

check these two links;

http://kb.mozillazine.org/Attachments_(Thunderbird)
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Resize_images

note the 'see also' and 'external links' at bottom of pages.

> How to solve?

1. Right click on the image and select "Save Image" from the menu
that appears.

2. In the "Save Image" dialog, click on "My Documents" in the
sidebar on the left.

3. Double click on "My Pictures" in the listed contents of "My
Documents".

4. a. If you want the picture directly in the "My Pictures"
folder, click on the "Save" button.

b. If you want the picture in a folder under (inside) "My
Pictures" double click on that folder, repeating as many
times as necessary if you need/want to go deeper into the
folder tree.

5. b. Click on the "Save" button.
