I'm using Gmail and IMAP with TB very happily but I cannot / will not
send using Gmail's SMTP server (the logical thing to do) because I do
not like the fact that Gmail inserts "sender" information in the sent
email headers. As I always use my domain email addresses and not the
Gmail address, it just looks plain unprofessional that emails received
from me announce themselves as being from x...@gmail.com on behalf of
m...@mydomain.com.

Is there any way of avoiding this while still utilising the Gmail
server? I currently send my emails using my ISP's SMTP server for this
reason.

Yes it is and that's how I'm using my ISP's smtp server to send my
emails - but I'd just like to know I could use the same server whatever
client I was using and whatever ISP.

Yours appears to be a question for one of the newsgroups about Google
services...
alt.comp.google
comp.internet.services.google

The only Thunderbird setting which can have any influence is the one
which you are already using -- the SMTP server setting.

ISTM that if Gmail is doing this, then it is most likely to
discourage forgery and spam through their mail servers.

What the heck is ISTM? Acronyms are a pain in the rear end.

It Seems To Me.

These are standard newsgroup abbreviations, so best to get used to them.
Here is a source for those you cannot dope out:

http://acronyms.thefreedictionary.com

Or a simple Google search will usually give you the answer.

FWIW, AFAIK ISTM means "It Seems To Me". IIRC. HAND.

... also, I did try posting on "googlegroups" (the WWW-oriented groups)
but never got a response there (you never do, on those groups, in my
experience).

Wilf,

This is by design to prevent spam. What's to stop someone else from impersonating your company email and ruining its good name?

If you want to use Google's blazing-fast email service for a business you own, consider signing up for Google Apps instead of piggy-backing on consumer Gmail:

Reuben, chances are good that Wilf has solved his problem in the ensuing
six-and-two-thirds-years since he posted. Please check relevant dates to
posts you might decide to reply to. Thanks for your consideration.
