Threads and "Unread" indication

I really like sorting emails by thread. You can keep track of the
conversation much easier.

However, it seems that when the thread is collapsed, therefore only
showing the message that started the thread, the bold which shows an
unread message doesn't show, so there's no way to know that a new
message in a thread has arrived, without expanding each thread to check.

Ideally, the collapsed thread would be bolded to show it contains a new
message. Is there any way to accomplish this?

The Thunderbird Conversations extension may interest you. It does
exactly what you want, but you have to accept some other changes like
using Unified folders.

Only a message that itself has not yet been opened is bold. A collapsed
thread in which the topmost message has been opened will be underlined
if other messages have not yet been opened.

This way, you don't have to re-read the top message in a thread that you
have already read. You can expand the thread and go down to the bold
messages.
