A friend uses TB on a XP machine for his work in a travel agency.
After a few days out of office (someone else used his computer during
that time) he discovered that:
- TB now proposes him always to archive messages
- hundreds of messages with travel information disappeared (have been
"archived"?)
- no archive files could be found in hes profile
Any idea what could be the cause of the disaster? Are the "archives"
permanently lost? How to recover concerned messages?

He used to move messages from inbox to other folders manually and would
at least be able to do that without the annoying proposal to archive.
I never used archiving (just filters); how can it be switched off?

Thanks for any solution,
Maurice

There is a preference in your account settings which will tell you where
archived messages are moved to.
See <http://support.mozillamessaging.com/en-US/kb/Archived-messages>.

Archiving does not happen automatically. You either have to click the
'Archive' button, or press the <a> key.

Thanks Chris. I found the option.
Now I'll have to try to find and recover the lost messages.

I have noticed that messages often disappear in Thunderbird when you click on "archive" or press a. The messages are still there but the folder somehow gets corrupted. Right-click on the inbox, select "properties" and then "repair folder" to get them back.

This seems to happen every time when I try to archive more than one message at the same time.

"Archiving" in TB is broken, not to mention badly designed (archives
should not be part of the TB folder system). To avoid the problem, use
Save As to save any must-keep files or attachments outside TB in a
folder tree of your own devising. Invent a naming scheme for folders and
files that suits your mode(s) of "where did I put that?"

FWIW, I've turned Archives off.

This rather indicates that your mail file is corrupted. Archiving
basically just moves messages to a pre-defined folder. You can do the
same thing manually. Also, rebuilding the index file will not move the
message back to the original folder.
In the light of potential corruption make sure you have a recent backup
of your profile.

And compact folders on a regular basis.
