I turned on the auto-compacting feature in the latest release of
Thunderbird. But now Thunderbird often presents a prompt that an e-mail
has a problem and do I want it to skip it. I think that is happening
because Thunderbird is doing an automatic compact at the same time it is
trying to download mail. The mail it usually fine, but sometimes it
seems like the headers get misplaced or confused with the headers from a
different e-mail.

What setting to I need to change/edit to turn the automatic compacting off?

Thanks,
Bernie

Tools => Options => Advanced => Network & Disk Space
_Disk Space_______________________________________________________
[ ] Compact folders when it will save over [_________] KB

If you untick the checkbox, there will be no automatic compacting. You should
still compact folders yourself from time to time to conserve disk space.
(Deleting a message doesn't reclaim its space, it just marks it as deleted in
the mailbox file.)

If the stored mail gets corrupt, you may want to close Thunderbird, delete the
.msf file for that "folder" (in the Mail subfolder of your profile folder, cf.
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_Folder ) then restart Thunderbird. All
deleted and read messages will (IIUC) reappear as "unread", but the indices
should get rebuilt properly on restart.

Best regards,
Tony.

Thanks, but will that restore the prompts that ask if I want to compact
the folders when the wasted space is bigger than a specified amount? In
the past the option you mention is the one that controlled that prompt,
if I recall correctly.

I only want to turn off the automatic compacting. I want to restore the
prompts that ask if I want to compact the folders.

Right. My question is how to turn that back on after having told
Thunderbird that it should go ahead and compact folders automatically.
In 2.0.0.4 you are asked if you want to switch to automatic compacting
every time the prompt is presented. I'm trying to find out how to
change back so that I receive the prompts.

I'm not sure, but I think that Tools => Options => Advanced => Config Editor
=> "mail.purge.ask" (double-click to toggle) might be what you're looking for.

Best regards,
Tony.

Yes, that did it! Thanks.

Now if I can confirm that I stop getting the messages that suggest that
some of the valid messages have a problem or may contain a virus I'll
know it was a conflict with the auto compacting while downloading and
I'll file a bug report. I'm surprised that I haven't seen anyone else
mention the problem.

Goto Tools>Options>Advanced>General>Config Editor,
type mail.purge.ask in filter.
Double click on it to set it true.
