and what does the Software Security Device do?

Because
1. At one time, in Thunderbird, you went to "Tools Options Privacy"
and you put a check-mark in the box "Use a master password to encrypt
stored passwords".
2. Thunderbird needs one of your stored passwords, to do one of the following
check for new email
check for new newsgroup messages

Because the stored password is encrypted, Thunderbird needs the
master password.

It encrypts all your stored passwords, using the master password
as the key.

Thanks Ralph but why should it demand the password EVERY time the mail
is checked? If this continues, I'll have to dump it.

I'm guessing it will keep asking until you give it the master password;
without that, it can't get to the stored password it needs to connect to
the mail server.

-------- Original-Nachricht --------

TB asks for your master password every time you start TB (if configured
to look for mails at startup). I it wouldn't then such a password
wouldn't make sense ...

Thanks Wilf and Bernd for the suggestions. I have unchecked the Check
for new messages at startup, so that might reduce the password request
to one a day. TBird is usually open all day. .

Tbird doesn't do that here. Tbird asks the first time I go online.
After that, TBird won't ask again until I close and re-start TBird.

If your TBird is asking every time, check and adjust the following setting:

1. Go to "Tools Options Advanced General"
2. Click the button labelled "Config Editor"
3. Scroll down to find the lines whose "Preference Name" is
security.ask_for_password
4. If this line is bold and the value is not 0, then
right-click on this line and choose "reset".
The value should now go to 0.

If after entering the Master Password your new email is retrieved but it
asks for it again minute later, that must mean TB is getting
disconnected from the mail server and has to re-initialize. Is your
Internet connection sound?

The Software Security Device encrypts your stored mail and news
passwords, so people going to Tools -> Options -> Security -> Passwrds
-> Saved Passwords on yur comoputer can't see your password.

You need to enter the master password in order to use such a password.

If you don't want your passwords protected, you can remove the master
password.

Ed, if you didn't notice, you answered a blank reply by a google grouper
to a message from 2009. I doubt if the question is still relevant.
