I've just started using Thunderbird at work. My work address has very
little allotted space for data, so I need a way to archive messages on
my computer. Apparently, local folders are standard with the
installation of Thunderbird, but I haven't been able to see them since
I installed the program.

I'm using Thunderbird 3.1.3 on a Mac, and I've gone through the
process of looking through all the preferences for some way I can turn
on local folders, but I've been unable to find anything. I've tried
reinstalling the program based on similar topics I've come across, but
that hasn't worked either. What else could be the problem?

Maybe it's just folder view related issue.

At the right-top corner of the folder pane (where you see the folder
listings ) you will see two little arrow sign to select between various
folder view like 'All folder' , 'Unread folders' etc.

If selected view name doesn't read as 'All folder' then use that little
arrow buttons to select that view.

Unfortunately I've tried that. Doesn't seem to be the problem.

Two more questions:

1. if you goto your account settings ( Tools > Account Settings ), do
you find any entry that has only two entries - Disk Space and Junk
Settings available under it? Just wondering in case you renamed the
original Local Folders to something else.

2. Does it appear when you start Tb in safe mode? Safe mode actually
disables all extensions for that session, making it possible to check if
the issue is caused by an extensions.
How to start in safe mode: <http://kb.mozillazine.org/Safe_Mode#Windows>

There is another scenario where it can be caused by pref.js file
corruption, which can be fixed by following the steps mentioned here
<http://kb.mozillazine.org/Local_Folders#Local_Folders_lost_during_an_upgrade>

I don't see anything like that in Account Settings. Did you mean under
Copies & Folders?

I have not installed any addons, and when I run it in safe mode, the
folder still doesn't come up.

If you are referring to Local Folders, the you're labouring under some
misunderstanding. This is just the default account set up by Tbird if
the individual accounts are not set up as "top level" accounts. It
includes Inbox, Sent, etc.

If you think that Tbird shows you some folders you have set up to
archive mail, I'm afraid you can do that only via Save As.

OK, I see your problem: you believe that "local folders" refers folders
on your machine. Not in this context, I'm afraid.

IF Tbird resides on your computer, then it saves all messages in Inbox
automatically (set Tbird to "Automatically download new messages" in the
account settings.) So your fear that you will lose messages is unfounded.

OTOH, if you want a nice tidy folder system for storing messages, here
are some fairly easy ways of doing it:

a) Use the Archive folder in Tbird to archive messages manually. This
folder exists on your machine. Highlight the message(s) you want to
keep, then right click (or Control-click if using a touch pad), then
select Archive, and click again. "Archive" creates subfolders by date,
but you can create your own folders, and Move messages to them.

b) Create one or more folders or folder trees within Tbird, and Move (or
drag'n'drop messages into them.) This also saves messages on your machine.

c) Use Save As to save messages one at a time in a folder of your choice
outside Tbird. You must create this folder first, and you must know how
to navigate to it so that you cvan see and select its name in the Save
As window.

Tip: Set Tbird to automatically Compact files. You'll find the setting
in Preferences. This needs to be done because the message folders are
not in fact folders, but files, and will grow very, very large if you
don't Compact them. (Delete and Move merely mark the messages so that
they don't show up in the message list, but do no in fact remove them.)
