how to access newsgroup by date

I'd like to get a particular file that was posted on Oct. 24, 2008.
I subscribed to giganews...and I still can't figure out how to
get this file.

The easiest way now may be to use Google Advanced Search.

Was setting up "unlimited" downloads a recent switch?
If you once downloaded, say, 100 of 500 messages and checked the box
"Mark remaining messages as Read" , you won't get another chance to
download those 400 missing "Read" messages again. They're not like
messages that you really *did* download and read, which you can read
again by viewing All Threads.
Okay, you'll get another chance if you edit a particular file, forcing
your newsreader to restart again with the article numbering. I think the
file would be something like "news.giganews.net.rc" here, but in your
Mozilla 1.7, on a Mac, I don't know. If you do find the file, change the
message numbers for the group you're interested in... e.g.
from - rec.kites: 1-149881
to - rec.kites: 1-1000
