Migrating from Mozilla to SeaMonkey

My wife has been using Mozilla 1.7.13 (on Mac OSX Panther) for quite
some time. I'm am keen to move her to SeaMonkey (with Moz being as long
in the tooth as it is and not being updated). She is loathe to switch to
something new but I presume that using SeaMonkey would be not that
different from what she's used to with Mozilla.

HOWEVER, I would need to easily migrate her Inbox and numerous
subfolders, bookmarks, etc., etc. WITHOUT a million headaches.

There is no mention of this on the mozilla.org web pages (that I've
seen) and I consider newsgroups to be a better resource generally.

So... has anybody made this transition on OSX and is it fairly simple to
accomplish? It would be SO nice if the installation asked "Want to use
the Moz data?" but I don't expect that, considering the TBird used to be
oh-so-ready to import Outlook Express data but not TBird data!

Thanks for replies!

its as simple as this: when you install SM, it will
start using the Mozilla Suite profile. You can't get
any more simpler than that.

Just one thought though: don't use Moz and SM on the
same profile.

One more thought: if she knows Moz Suite, then SM will
come naturally. They're the same program, except SM is
a little more advanced than Moz.

Incase you don't know, the profile is where all the
data, bookmarks, prefs, passwords, etc. are stored.

Malcolm, as Peter said, it should just be a case of installing SeaMonkey
(or dock it or whatever you Mac people do!!) and it should just pick up
your moz profile, straight out of the box.

The current version, I think, is version 1.1.13, although there is a new
version (1.1.14) due out in the next week or so, or, if you wait a
little bit longer you might try installing version 2.0, which is a
re-write of ver 1.x but maintains the same look as Moz Suite.

As I understand it, SM 1.1.13 or 14 will just pick up her current
profile and run with it. SM 2 will copy the profile and change it to
suit, leaving the old profile untouched.

You might/will have to update any extensions she has installed.

it might maintain the same look as Moz Suite, but it
will be a drastic change over Moz and SM.

1.1.14 is a good idea, and IIRC it should run fine, but I fear that 2.0
(Alpha) will not run on Panther, you need at least Tiger (10.4) for that
one.

So I suggest you get her to SeaMonkey 1.1.14, which is very much the
same as Mozilla 1.7.13 but with a few new features and up-to-date
security. SeaMonkey 1.x is the straight continuation of the Mozilla
suite code.

SeaMonkey 2 and above will be a transplant of most of the the
user-facing parts of that code to the same base that Firefox 3 and
Thunderbird 3 are using.

Indeed! Thanks, Peter.

She has none. Doesn't know she has options! Doesn't even know about
SeaMonkey!

Not an option. I dragged my feet about getting Tiger and, once Leopard
was out, Tiger was gone! And Leopard won't (officially) run on my 800MHz
G4. :( If Apple still sold Tiger, I'd probably buy it. But NOOOOOOOO...

My 800MHz iBook runs Leopard pretty well. Doesn't feel faster than
Tiger, but it's worth the pain for the small amount of software
requiring it. The hacks needed to install it are very mature and easy to
apply. I'd recommend upgrading, even though it's not officially supported.

The one I like is half-booting to a command line, telling the machine
its speed is 867 and then continuing the boot into OSX. Then when the
installer asks, the Mac says it's the required speed and the install
happens. When you boot the next time, you're back to being 800 but
Leopard is installed and running. A LOT simpler than editing the DVD.

Just a couple lines of typing. I've got the link somewhere.

IMHO, the best alternative to most users is Leopard Assistant:

Sad to say, my iMac is the one modeled listed in the table as
"Uncertain", though I note that the original article did not indicate that.

It's the half-a-soccer-ball 17" flat panel.
