For some time, I have downloaded messages from both the secnews and
news.mozilla.org servers, because I'm on dial-up and figured if I D/l
all the messages, I could then read at my leisure and have my phone line
free, in case someone was trying to contact my by 'phone.

Occasionally I forget to select one of the news servers before trying to
D/L, but when I do this, the "Offline" selection is greyed out, letting
me know I've stuffed up again.

When I get it right, it has always intrigued me that, when I want to D/L
the news groups, I can select to d/l my mail at the same time. Why,
then, can I not D/L my news groups whilst D/L'ing e-mail, but HAVE to
select a news server to get both?

Anybody got any ideas??

Sorry, Lou. I subscribe to four news servers, and usually d/l from two.
So what's this got to do with not being able to D/L my News groups when
I have my mail account selected when I can D/L my mail if I have any of
the four News servers selected?

Thanks, Lou, yes I know this, but, as I say, if I can also D/L my mail
whilst d/l'ing the newsgroups, Why isn't the program set up so that
whilst I'm d/l'ing my mail, I can also d/l my newsgroups??

You can. You can either download newsgroups manually (like downloading
mail manually using Get Mail) or you can have the program do it for you
on an automatic basis (like you have with mail). That way you can be
reading your mail and getting your newsgroups at the same time.

Caveat: I recommend mail check times of 5 minutes or more, and news
server check times of 10 minutes or more.

I do exactly that in SM. I've selected newsgroups for
downloading for offline reading, and when I click the
"disconnect" icon, all my newsgroups and e-mails are downloaded.

Then I disconnect from the Internet and read and reply to
messages offline like I'm doing right now 8-)

But can you D/l these newsgroups for offline reading without first
selecting the news server. I believe not, which is the basis for this
thread..........

If I can select one of my News servers then select File|Offline and
select Download|Sync Now, I can select which of my news groups I want to
D/L AND I CAN SELECT TO D\L MY MAIL so, if I have my mail account
selected, why cannot I select to D\L my news groups as well at the same
time?

Yes, you can download for offline use without manually selecting the
news server or groups

You tell SeaMonkey what servers, and what groups you want downloaded,
and when you go offline, it grabs the groups for you, automatically
(confirmation click)

Yes you can.

That's not how you do it. You set the preference called
"select newsgroups of offline reading"; you might also have to
change "when downloading messages/ask me."

Thanks to both of you for sticking with me, gw and Mumia.

Of course, now that I've read everything on the secnews and news.mozilla
groups that I have selected, when I went offline (File|Offline|Work
offline, or just clicking on the bottom right symbol, nothing happened,
but, now that there is something new on this server, i.e. this message,
I'll see if I get asked, and get back to you.

Back online.

When I went offline, either by disconnecting the symbol or by selecting
File|Offline|Work Offline, nothing happened, except the symbol
separated. It didn't matter if I had the mail account or this server
account selected at the time of going offline. I have eight groups
selected for D/L, three on the Moz server and five on the secnews server.

What have I broken now?

I gave you the brief instructions because I'm lazy, and this
is free tech. support ;-)

You have to select the newsgroups you want download first in
"Edit/Mail&Newsgroup Account Settings/<Your-Account> /
Offline&Disk Space/Select newsgroups for offline usage."

It's a good idea to go through all of the preferences menus
and click on all of the buttons to see what's there to
familiarize yourself with Mozilla.

Yep, been with this since about Netscape 4.5 or thereabouts, so been
through all of the menus heaps of times, I would think, and in my other
message I said I had eight groups selected for D/L'ing but nothing happened.

Also select "Edit/Preferences/Mail & Newsgrups/Offline&Disk
Space/Download messages for offline use when going offline/Yes."

And now I remember why I disabled this "download before going off-line"
feature before. Once you are off-line, for some reason SM forgets to
"empty trash on exit" so any virii I might be sent stay with me.

So what? A virus cant do anything unless its activated, unless you are
in the habit of launching attachments you havent checked from the trash
of course.

So remember to empty the trash before you exit SM or write a
shell script that (called from cron) periodically clears the
"Trash" file when Seamonkey is not running.
