following what? You mean disconnections after time outs?
Which program? Mozilla-suite or Firefox or SeaMonkey?
Whats the actual error message you get? Does it occur on specific sites
or all sites (random)?

Yes

I don't know as it only happens intermittently. Today I haven't had a
problem. The error message said something like the operation had timed
out then I was disconnected. I'm also getting a lot of 'unresolved host'
error messages when surfing. Usually 2 attempts in these cases allows me
to connect to a website.
You mean Mozilla suite? 1.7.13? Firefox/SeaMonkey and Thunderbird are
also by Mozilla
Are you using a proxy? What speed are you conneccting at? Which ISP?
This happens to me a lot too, running Mozilla 1.7.13. One machine uses
Comcast cable and another uses Sprint DSL. No Proxy.
It's an intermittent problem on both machines, somewhat aggravating, and I
have no idea whether it's an internet connection problem, a Windows
problem, or something in Mozilla. Doesn't happen every day, but often
happens a dozen times a day. Random sites, no pattern detectable, except
that "just trying again" generally makes it work, at least on the third or
fourth try.
Any hints would be appreciated!
Yes Mozilla 1.7. Not using proxy. Disconnection usually occurs when
connecting speed is low, ie under 45.2 kpbs, which is the normal
connection speed 90% of the time. If it runs much below this there is a
danger of disconnection after a few minutes. There is no proxy
connection. Current speed is 46.6 kbps. ISP is BTOpenworld.

I would suspect its a line and/or Windows problem - if it was
something in Firefox or SeaMonkey or Thunderbird it would occur ALL the time
I had a similar problem with my connection once, and it turned out to be
a 'snippet' of the core left in one of the connections (downstream from
me as well). When the sun hit the area, it warmed up, the 'snippet'
expanded, and POOF disconnect (shorting out the coax). Went thru 3
modems before a worker found the problem.
Have you checked your connections? For telephone type, use an old (but
clean) toothbrush on them to ensure there isnt any corrossion. For
coaxial type, ensure there is no debris in the connectors.

Sounds like a line problem.
Tests for line quality.
pick up the phone (connect phone to same port as modem for the test),
dial 1 (to get rid of the dialtone), listen. Any hums 'whooshes' or
other noise indicate a noisy line that your local telco should look at.
If there are other devices on the line (answering machines etc)
disconnect them and test as well.
I'll check this out, thanks for the tip.
