Can someone please explain:
1. the essential differences between tags and keywords?
2. how tags and/or keywords can be used if I am looking for a bookmark buried
in multiple levels?
A keyword has a 1:1 correspondence (alias) to a bookmark, Opera has
something similar but nowhere near as useful, and they call it
a nickname which is perhaps closer to what it really is. The keyword
is not searchable when you search for name or description, unless
you include the keyword within the description. All of my keyworded
bookmarks place the keyword at the beginning of the name and all of
my keywords include a colon at the end or after part of the name
-- "g:", "ggff:", "gg:fix", "1024:", "resize:help", "::", "ffweb3:"

keywords are the most powerful feature of Firefox, with the AwesomeBar
type search just behind it, together they make Firefox very powerful.
Essentially because a "keyword" is an alias you would not have to go
hunting through levels of bookmarks because it would be familiar to you
directly such as an abbreviation, a first letters of each word of a company,
of your town library, etc. I tend to put most of my keywords into one
directory since the keyword is first, if I forget what it is I can find it by
scrolling through the "K" folder on my bookmarks toolbar or using
the location bar autocomplete search (AwesomeBar search). You can also
see them in the library list by adding columns through view menu or
double-clicking on the column.

Tags are names that you can associate with a bookmark, you can have
many tags for a bookmark, each tag will essentially add another bookmark
to the original. If you are familiar with Delicious you will see tags in use.
http://www.delicious.com/
Tags are like the keywords that you assign to an abstract, or the keywords
that you add in the meta data in an HTML file. Tags will work great for
an extremely large database across a very wide range of interests. They
won't work that well if you have narrow interests -- if you put firefox or
computers on 10% of your bookmarks it would be practically meaningless
but not for a large database like delicious where the percentages would be extremely low for individual tag names.
In Firefox you can limit searching at the location bar to only tags
by including a + when doing an AwesomeBar type search.

Perspective:
Since you can modify the name of a bookmark to help you with searching
nothing much was really added to Firefox from a usage point of view with
tags. Instead tags has created a lot of confusion when it comes to the added
drop-downs to support tags next to the dropdowns to support the bookmarks.
I would suggest that you install the extension "Add Bookmark Here" extension
https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/add-bookmark-here-%C2%B2/
To help with scrolling through bookmarks and menus, would suggest
you install these styles. (Style 52 also handles bookmark menus)
Increase the drop-down in both styles to 650px and add "(650px)"
to the names of both styles to let you know you made a modification.

There is a keyword extension to help you find your keywords
but I don't use it myself.
keywordManager :: Add-ons for Firefox
https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/keywordmanager/
Tags and keywords are to help you use bookmarks not particularly
to find them, but you can search for them in the Library list, and
if you have installed the "Show Parent" extension you can see
what folder your search hits are in.

HTH,
David McRitchie, extensions I use are briefly documented on my site
Firefox Custom: http://www.mvps.org/dmcritchie/firefox/firefox.htm
"essentially", in one sense of word, when you save your bookmarks as
'bookmarks.htm' file, 'keyword' is saved, 'tag' is not.
when using a 'tag' for multi bookmarks, all bookmarks with common
'tag' are show under "Tags" heading. there is no "Keywords" heading.
both have 'columns' in folder view.
a 'tag' is case sensitive. 'keyword' is not.
'tag' has a page at http://kb.mozillazine.org/Tags
'keyword' does not.
entering 'tag' in a search bar at mozillazine.org give you;

entering 'keyword' in a search bar at mozillazine.org give you;
http://www.google.com/cse?cx=003258325049489668794%3Aru2dpahviq8&q=keyword&sa=Search&cof=FORID%3A0

either can be used for search.

Tags are a way to categorize your bookmarks without restrict them to one
category.
See <http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Bookmark%20tags>.
Keywords are aliases for individual bookmarks are search engines.
See <http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Smart%20keywords>.

That is incorrect both tags and keywords are case insensitive
they would be very hard to use if they were case sensitive.
There are examples of in MozillaZine for keyword shortcuts
but Mozilla has a habit of putting "smart" in front of things
and then reusing the terms later to mean something else.
"smart keywords" has had three different meanings.
-- keyword shortcuts
-- tags
-- strings used in AwesomeBar search
There are pages in MozillaZine that somewhat describe
keyword shortcuts, which I don't like, nor the page in
support.mozilla.com -- But
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Using_keyword_searches
is better than either

but for a better understanding, see

i love it when you reply to a post that i make. especially when you
go to such extremes to change your email client's normal forming.
thank you for giving me so much attention.
also, thank you for trimming your reply.
> That is incorrect both tags and keywords are case insensitive

this is true. in typing, i left out 2 words.
where i wrote;
}> a 'tag' is case sensitive. 'keyword' is not.
intent was to read;
a 'tag' is *defined/displayed* case sensitive. 'keyword' is not.
thank you for pointing this out.
tho "win user" would have seen such about 'case sensitive' in reading page;
}> 'tag' has a page at http://kb.mozillazine.org/Tags
and "'keyword' does not.", would have read better as;
'keyword' does not have a page http://kb.mozillazine.org/Keywords
<snip of trivial comments>
> There are examples of in MozillaZine for keyword shortcuts
'keyword shortcuts' is a whole different ball of wax and used more
so for searching from location bar, and different from op "win user"
post of;
}> 2. how tags and/or keywords can be used if I am looking for a bookmark
}> buried in multiple levels?
from which, i presumed op's intent of searching from 'library'.

your opinion.
