Hello.

Is it me or does the newer Firefox web browser versions do not have a
print preview? I noticed this recently in my client's updated Mac OS X
10.8.5 on a 13.3" MacBook Pro.

Thank you in advance. :)

Both the Windows version and the Linux version do have a print preview.

File >> Print Preview
or
☰ [Menu button] >> Print

I am using
Firefox 35.0.1 on Windows
Firefox 35.0 on Linux Mint

I once lost the print preview function (in TB in that case however)
because of entries in pref.js that concerned obsolete printers.

Ah, the connected printer was like a decade old for sure. Maybe that's
why! What are the prefs.js entries to make these printers have previews?

That's not my point. In my case these were printers that didn't exist
any longer but whose entries were still in prefs.js and obviously
"choked" the preview function of the current printer.

What are the prefs.js entries to make these printers have previews?

Have a look yourself in prefs.js at the numerous entries under
user_pref("print.printer_ ...)

Why not create a clean profile and see if the problem persists. If no
problem, then play with prefs. I suspect you can just remove all the
printer entries but I've never tried this.

I have FF 35.0.1, and have the Print Preview in File.

One way to avoid the problem of obsolete Printers is to add a PDF
printer to your system and make that your default printer.

This works well for me, however I only print to paper when I want to
copy it for a meeting.

Lo and behold! As I've just seen when answering Ant: There is already
one obsolete PDF printer in my prefs.js. :-)

I found an obsolete printer, and two sets of entries for existing printers.

Deleted the obsolete entries, what do I do with the duplicates?

I honestly don't know. I simply mentioned above that I once had this
problem with obsolete printer entries in prefs.js (TB) which "choked"
the print preview. Deleting them solved the problem.

As an experiment I deleted all my printer entries, and things still work.

I think I will just delete all printer entries in Firefox's prefs.js to try.

Here's my observation.

Close the app.

Delete ALL printer prefs in prefs.js

Run the app.

Print something to any of your system printers. Firefox will find the
printers from the Windows registry and update prefs.js.

That will be fine. The next time you ask FF to print something it will
populate prefs.js with your system printer info.

OK. :) IIRC, this Firefox installation came from a previous MacBook Pro
with Mac OS X 10.5.8 many years ago. I will make a back up of prefs.js
file to be safe too.

For kicks, I renamed this file and started up Firefox to redo its
prefs.js file. Same results (no print preview). I also tried the other
Mac OS X v10.8.5 account (administrator instead of standard level) and
still saw the same problem. Also, here is a screen shot/capture of the
main printer options: http://i.imgur.com/efNtEZj.gif ... I also checked
every options and could not any preview. :(

Now what? Is there somewhere else to look? FYI, it doesn't matter if the
HP printer is slightly new (a few years old) or over a decade old. :(

Your empty prefs suggest TB thinks you do not have a printer available to

Hmm, this system never had ThunderBird client. It's just Firefox. This
MacBook Pro is currently connected to two different printers though
through an USB cable (old printer) and wirelessly (newer printer). There
were previous printers too from the past.

My printer driver presents its own print preview. Sure don't need two
of them, so perhaps this gets turned off or on, based on your particular
printer specs.

"cat prefs.js" is not needed.

easier/shorter command is "grep print_printer prefs.js".

actually, in 'prefs.js', contrary to your 'grep', you show
"print.print" and you have 2 "print_printer".

user_pref("print.print_printer", "");
user_pref("print_printer", "");

tho you are posting using oos, you are posting *nix commands.

if you are actually debugging a *nix system, why not install "CUPS"
if not already installed, to set up printers. once "CUPS" is working,
firefox will/should pick up the printers.

CUPS is the standards-based, open source printing system developed
by Apple Inc. for Mac OS® X and other UNIX®-like operating systems.

you connect to CUPS via firefox using http://localhost:631/.

this is how i have my 4 printers set up and they work for both
firefox and thunderbird. if/when i need to change among printers,
i make change using CUPS.

with CUPS, in both firefox and thunderbird, i get;

}> [geo@boxen bsyq4708.default]$ grep print_printer prefs.js
}> user_pref("print_printer", "PostScript/default");
}> [geo@boxen bsyq4708.default]$

*NOTE*
1] i _do_not_show_ 'user_pref("print_printer", "");'.
2] with end of line of ""); it is indicating that you
do not have any printer configured because the printer
shows within the "".

speaking of which, does printing work under thunderbird?

if not and you do have CUPS running and configured, it will block
printing if it is not set up correctly.

again, what about CUPS?

just look to see if you have CUPS set up. if you a printer that does
not have correct drivers for CUPS installed for any printer of any
make, type, or age, CUPS will not configure for it. correct drivers
must be installed and are available for over 99% of printers
available. should you have a make/type not listed, there is a 99.9%
probability that a similar driver will work.

so, click link http://localhost:631/ to see if you have CUPS and
configure it.

more CUPS info at;

http://www.cups.org/
http://www.cups.org/documentation.php

if you have any problems or questions, contact me off list by
inserting [off-list] in "Subject:" bar and send direct to me.

or, post back with "followup set to mozilla.general" an i will
follow, and i do believe rest of *nix users will also.

because he is running os x, i believe Ant does not have CUPS configure
so that neither _firefox_ or thunderbird can see a printer.

*nix systems must have CUPS configured for printing to be done.

Wait, printer preview option is based on printer drivers? Hmm. I wonder
if HP and CUPS drivers are causing this in Mac OS X 10.8.5.

Not sure if anybody has already suggested to you but have you tried creating a new profile in your Mac OS?  It looks like your original profile is corrupted.  It is inconceivable that only print-preview is missing from the FF's UI?  Something else must also be missing.

Don't use and never had Thunderbird on this lappy, but do have CUPS due
to old printers that Apple doesn't support by default. :(

All printers worked in the past. Just no print preview option for
Firefox (other non-Mozilla programs have them). I just noticed SeaMonkey
v2.32 doesn't have a print preview option like in Windows as well so
crossposted to mozilla.support.seamonkey newsgroup as well. :(

Yes, with other old and brand new Mac OS X 10.8.5 accounts. I also
discovered SeaMonkey has the same missing printer preview option too.

Both FF and TB profiles will have those printer prefs, a set for each
printer used with them at any time. In the past I discovered preview
would be broken if the USB cable was disconnected from an HP DJ960c. Kept
the printer around just to enable the preview.

nice printer network. usb sure beats the hell out of lpr and a switch
box. :-)

from any CUPS page select Printers tab. on Printers page, click a
printer name.

on printers page, click [Maintenance], select "Print Test Page".

after printing, select "Print Self Test Page".

if both print, open some other program, ie, an editor, create some
text lines, send to printer.

if it prints, there is a problem with interface to firefox.

if you can not print from another program, there is a problem with
CUPS interfacing to programs.

i have not had any problems with CUPS from day one of use.

because this is appearing to be CUPS related, my best suggestion is
to log https://www.cups.org/ and join or login.

enter 'firefox' as search. check thru 'matches' to see if you find
anything. if not, post to 'Developers' list which should get faster
reply that other lists.

at one time, under fedora or mandrake, do not recall, there was an
option of selecting CUPS or postscript printing. i no longer see
such. if you have such selection of ability to use utility other
than CUPS, you might give it a try.

also, have you tried a web search? it is possible that there has been
such a problem with another flavor of *nix.

one last thought, *default*. have you tried, or have, a setting for
a printer as the default?

because i use a switch box, i have to select which printer is the
default before i print. possible you need to do same.

i do wish i could have been more help, but my experience and knowledge
has never encountered problem similar to this.

hopefully another linux user will pick up on this thread and be able
to help you.

i also wish i could spend more time with you on this, but i have run
into a portioning problem that i need to correct so i can upgrade to
centos 7.

much luck.

No kidding. My client refused to let go of his old printers (e.g.,

Anyways, the current printers are HP with this MBP: DJ 450 and Office

No problems from previous printings like Office, Safari, Chrome, etc. so
no need to print again.

I wonder if OTHER Mac OS X users have this problem too. Wait, am I the

Which begs the question as to why Firefox needs to keep its own list of printers if it can find them in the registry. Printing is not a browser function, it's an OS function, isn't it? Or at least it should be.

Not entirely; some sites/pages/whatever have an almost entirely
different layout for printing. (Wikipedia being the most obvious one
that comes to mind.) Not, I agree, that that necessitates the browser
keeping a list of printers, though!

And didn't, or certainly didn't used to (?), if you changed paper size
(within Firefox): I have found in the past (not tried it recently) that
changing from A4 to A3 paper or back required an actual print* before
print preview would reflect the change. (*: it's just occurred to me
while typing this that I could have tried using a PDF "printer" like
pdf995; maybe I'll try that next time.)

No print preview neither with Firefox nor with Thunderbird.
As a workaround you may click on the PDF button in the printer window

It may be different for a Mac, but when I click on the the Print icon in
my Firefox, all I get is a Print Preview. Then I click the Print button
to print.

No extension necessary.

I have the Menu bar displayed on my Laptop (Win 7) and my Desktop (Win
8.1 Pro). Choosing FILE shows Print and Print Preview as it has always been.

Problem must be another wonderful feature of an Apple computer!

When I print documents under Mac OS X, the printer dialogue box opens
and automatically displays a small print preview.
The same happens when I print a webpage in Safari or an email in Apple
Mail, but not with Firefox or Thunderbird.
