Will this open up Firefox to all ActiveX controls, instead of just the
one for Windows Media Player? The advantage of Adam Locke's plugin
(http://www.iol.ie/~locka/mozilla/plugin.htm#download) was that it was
limited to just the ActiveX control for WMP.

Thanks. I'm still doing pretty good with Adam Locke's plugin, even
though he apparently hasn't updated it since Firefox 1.5. It would just
be nice to use Firefox with every occurrence of WMP, such as at Yahoo
music, etc., which still remains IE-only. I'm going to wait until some
more comments come in from the Mozilla community on this new plugin
before trying it myself.

I have found this MozillaZine discussion of the new plugin, from this
article it appears legit:

Well, installing it still doesn't make Yahoo Launch radio stations play
in Firefox, still get the "we don't work in Firefox or Mac" message.

You need to download the plugin Flip4Mac which allows playing all wmv,
wma files except those using Microsoft's Digital Rights Management.
Works great. goes in the internet Plugins folder in the Main Library
file > internet Plug-ins.

Hi, I'm using a PC, not a Mac, so will this plugin also work on a PC?

I am not aware if it will. One of the respondent's was trying to get
wmv/wma files to work on a Mac.

MS in its infinite wisdom after years of support for Windows Media Play
for Mac. Almost from the time Mac came out, decided to pull all support
for Mac.

a Company called Flip4Mac has come out with a Plugin that will play
those files except for those files that are created with MS DRM used.
Flip4Mac can get rights to use the MS DRM. MS doesn't want anything to
do with making it so That Mac can use WMV/WMA files. This is another
needle stuck in Apple voodoo doll to cause pain. :-(

Probably not, but on a PC, you don't *need* it, as WMP is a native app.

Yahoo Launch radio stations still give "we don't work in Firefox or Mac"
message, even on a PC.

That's true, but unfortunately, Microsoft has set up WMP so that on
certain web sites, such as Yahoo's LAUNCHCast, embedded WMP files (such
as the radio stations) will not play in Mozilla or Firefox, even when
using Adam Locke's WMP plugin and other workarounds. I've set up
LAUNCHCast to open in IE only, but I resent being made to do that when
other Internet radio sites, such as Accuradio, have no problem playing
its embedded WMP files in Firefox. Maybe it's just a matter of patrons
beating on Yahoo long enough to be Firefox-friendly, but with Microsoft
now pushing hard to buy out Yahoo, that's probably not going to happen.

Yes, which I don't get. Last time I looked, Firefox and Mac users spend
the same green money like everyone else.

What happens if you tell Yahoo you are using IE when you access the
site? There are several extensions that will let you modify what FF
returns as the user agent string when a site says "What browser are
you?" I've successfully accessed sites that worked fine in FF, if I
told FF to claim it was IE. I don't think it's Microsoft's doing that
WMP doesn't work. I thinks its a matter of how Yahoo codes the sites.

I don't use Yahoo Launchcast, and haven't seen the issue, so I don't
know if my workaround it will solve the problem, but it's worth a try.

Yes, I know MS is after Yahoo. Their attempts to build a portal and
search engine business of their own have lagged badly, and acquiring
Yahoo would be a quick way to become more competitive with Google.

First, they need regulatory approval, and next, Yahoo has to be willing
to be acquired. An unfriendly takeover is a possibility, but would be a
bad idea for the hoped for combination. And too much of the market uses
Firefox for it to be ignored, not even counting platforms like the Mac
where WMP is no longer officially supported.

Thanks. I have User Agent Switcher installed, and I believe I tried a
time or 2 to fake out Yahoo that I was using IE, but then, if I'm
remembering right, the embedded player would load but wouldn't run. I
definitely hope any MS takeover of Yahoo is blocked, it would wreck one
of the search and portal pioneers of the web.

I just tried it here, and it didn't give me the error message about
Firefox being unsupported, but it wouldn't actually play anything.

Firebug showed some script errors in the site trying to do a bitrate
calculation, probably to determine the rate at which it could stream the
content.

I'm hoping Yahoo is unthrilled enough to force the asking price to a
level that will make even MS blink.
