Alt key
Bookmarks tab
Show All Bookmarks

Are any listed under the Bookmarks Toolbar tree node?

Did you create a new Firefox profile?

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/recover-lost-or-missing-bookmarks

Do you use Firefox Sync? I've noticed that I might lost a couple
bookmarks (most often the one for Google). I see reports from other
users that they lost bookmarks when using Firefox Sync, mostly when they
have multiple devices using Firefox Sync to sync using the same Firefox
Sync account. Unlike Robocopy, Syncback, or other file sync tools that
provide options on how to handle differences in files between source and
target locations, Firefox Sync has no options how to handle when one
device doesn't have a bookmark that isn't in the account or when one
device deletes a bookmark how it is reflected in the account (and to
other devices), and other scenarios. I know one time that I uninstalled
Firefox, deleted its profile (so I really did start with a fresh
reinstall), reinstalled it, and expected Firefox Sync to get all my
bookmarks from the online account but instead all bookmarks were lost
(since they obviously weren't in the new install). I had to export them
from Internet Explorer and into Firefox. I probably could have also
gotten them from my backups. Users have noted that bookmarks migrated
to a new host just fine one day and 24 hours later the bookmarks
disappeared from both hosts (using the same Firefox Sync account).
Another problem that crops up with Firefox Sync is duplicated bookmarks.
So disable Firefox Sync if you really don't need it. Since I save image
backups (full each week, differential each day) and with the problems
that Firefox Sync causes (by others than just me) then I disabled it.
The feature of synchronizing across multiple devices through an online
account is nice but not worth losing bookmarks (totally, getting back an
old definition, or having to delete duplicates). I might turn it on at
a "source" device to sync up to account, turn off sync, and use it
temporarily on another device to get my bookmarks over there (and other
setup, like add-ons).

That is a lot of really helpful information.
Thanks.

Yes I use sync.

I discovered I could import a saved copy from the "bookmarkbackups" folder in my profile, and that helped.
