FF 23.0.1
On the far right side of my bookmark toolbar there always used to be an icon to pull down my bookmarks. I am not referring to the standard bookmark icon (a star in a square with a drop down arrow next to it) on the right side of the navigation toolbar. The icon in question appeared on the same line as the bookmark bar. I am also not talking about the dual arrows pointing to the right on the right of the toolbar that will show additional toolbar items. The missing icon was to the right of those arrows. I'm not sure why but this must have had something to do with it; we had a momentary power failure and the computer shut down and rebooted itself. When it did so the icon was gone. Help please.

Thanks in advance... bob

The topic is discussed there but not solved ()the icon is not visible wether the Book Marks toolbar is on or off. The last entry of that thread (August 16th) is still offering suggestions on how to solve my problem. FYI: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/bookmarks-toolbar-display-favorite-websites does indeed show the icon I'm talking about at the far right.

Wasn't there a mention of using Customize, and dragging and dropping the
icon from the Customize window to the Bookmarks Toolbar?

It opens the Bookmarks Sidebar.

Yes there was the icon only. But I am referring to the entire word "Bookmarks" appearing as it does in the link I provided. Please do not tell me to check the "icon & text" or only "text" option as that seems to be global, I am only talking about the bookmark one.Gosh, I sure hope I mentioned that in my original post.

Thanks... Bob

Nope you only mentioned icon, and titled the post "Bookmarks icon missing".

I'm stumped.

I just noticed this post in the Google group linked to:

"Right click on the orange Firefox button, select Customize, drag and
drop the bookmarks icon back under the Search bar."

Nothing happens when I right-click the orange Firefox button, and I mean
literally nothing shows up.

Left click the orange Firefox button (not right click). This animated
screen-shot shows what you should see.

It also shows how to open the Customize Toolbar window.

I did that - for all the various windows I had open - and after it was
complete I found I'd installed the wrong bookmarks button. Aargh!

Why was the bookmarks button removed from the toolbar in FF23? Was it
by design or accident?

The bookmarks button was not removed from my toolbar in FF23.
I still have both bookmarks buttons after upgrading to Firefox 23.

(I moved the bookmarks _sidebar_ button over to the left a couple
of years ago, as I like it to be near where the sidebar appears.)

This is no longer an issue with me, but as far as I'm concerned, the
Bookmarks button that was under the Search box has been removed. Using
the Customize feature can get a Bookmarks button back, but clicking that
opens a sidebar. But this ceased to be an issue once I discovered that
the Bookmarks icon immediately to the right of the orange Firefox button
does the same as the button that was lost.
