I have to send my 9 mos old desktop back to have 2 CPU replaced. If I
move my default profile from that machine onto my laptop in the proper
folder, will that automatically cause the profile selector dialog to
come up when I open FF? This is what I want. If it is not
automatically going to happen, what do I have to do to make it happen.

TIA
Jim

Almost. You also have to tell Firefox the name of the folder. Try the
instructions at
<http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Backing+up+your+information#Restoring_a_profile_backup>.

Assuming you know where your Firefox profile is and how to create
a new profile. If not probably see http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_Manager

Create a new Firefox profile on your laptop calling it anything you
want to call it, but do not use spaces as that will cause problems elsewhere
such as if you use the "Launchy" extension now or later, and with multiple
profiles it would be good to have see my firefox.htm page.
It is not a good idea to rename your profile later as that does not change
the file name and wherever it is referred to.

Your profile name is case-sensitive. so be careful. After you have created
the new profile delete the entire content of the new Firefox profile and
copy in your desktop Firefox profile into it. To see why you should
avoid spaces see launchy.xml example in
http://www.mvps.org/dmcritchie/firefox/firefox.htm#launchy

You might want to check the about:config afterward to see if you
have any pathnames thaw might cause a problem by filtering on
C: and on your old-profile-name

More information on Multiple Profiles in
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Using_multiple_profiles_-_Firefox

You might want to call your profile "Desktop". I have four
profiles for Firefox Three (FirefoxThree, Persona01, Pesonas02, Persona03)
the later are used in various stages of customization.. Then I have profiles
to go with Beta testing named for the one each runs on (Namoroka, Minefield),
I want to be careful not to share a profile between two versions of Firefox.
Permanent upgrading within each is fine..

What about backing up your other user data.
You might check with them to see if you can remove your hard drive
and keep it safe. When you say profile, since this is a Firefox newsgroup
I assume you mean your Firefox profile. But you probably have a user account
on machine for all applications and you probably have additional personal file
that you you installed from your root directory as well.

Thanks. I regularly back up all critical info and will do so before
sending it off. The hard drive needs to go anyway, because the USB
drivers are messed up.
