FF 3.6.3 for Linux.
I am getting real tired of having to hand type the program
to open attachments. FF thinks everything wants to
open with VLC (.doc, .pdf, .zip, yada, yada, yada).
Is there a fix for this?
Many thanks,

Tools --> Options --> Applications
IIRC, in all OSs, including Linux, applications call the system default
app for opening files when needed. So you have to specify alternatives
from within the app (if it offers that option) as propman indicates.

I looked in applications. Nothing seems out of place. I have
been having to use the "other" and type it in manually
(/usr/bin/acroread). The problem seems to happen mostly
when I am trying to open files with long names.
For instance: abc.pdf will open Acroread without problems.
But, MylongWindedVLC-file.pdf will not see the pdf at the end and
try to open VLC. It is really annoying.

Is there a Folders Options file in Linux like in Windows? In Windows
Control Panel/ FolderOptions/ File Types. The settings there seem to
override FF in my computer. I had a problem where the Windows Media
Player was trying to open all of my video files. I changed the file
extension types I wanted VLC to open to VLC instead of the defaulted
Windows Media File. PDF may be defaulted to VLC.

Just out of curosity....have you tried right clicking on the file name
and selecting Properties --> Open With (outside of FF, that is) to see
if somehow your system is over-riding FF's preferences?
FWIW, today I installed Acroread on my linux mint 8 box and don't seem
to have any problem opening pdf's with long file names.
As long as there is something that is associated with the file type, it
will be listed in the Applications window. You can choose another
application to handle that type of file if you do not like the default.
You can list as many applications as you like, set Firefox to ask
first, and then choose which app you want to use, or you can choose to
save the file for later.
If the OP is using the KDE desktop, there is a File Associations menu
under Desktop Settings, Advanced tab. But that is for the opposite
problem: click on a file in a file manager, and it will open in the
selected application.
What the OP should be able to use is in Firefox itself, Edit menu ->
Preferences -> Applications.

maybe configure your applications correctly?

Yes there is a preferred applications setting.
But, no, VLC doesn't do .pdf so someone screwed the pooch with Firefox
thinking such things.
Guess we'll have to wait for Todd or Margo to come back to embellish a
bit - maybe a borked profile or panacea.....

Everything else works fine.

From what I can tell, if the letters vlc appear somewhere in the
long file name, I get vlc.
I am using Xfce 4.4.2
-T
Panacea.dat is Tbird, not FF, I think...
Have you tried a new profile just for the heck of it?
Can't speak for Xfce but the issues - long file name and vlc in name,
make no sense to me. I've not heard of file name lengths having any set
limitations beyond , maybe, 255 characters. Have you tried to repair
VLC via synaptic?
Better yet, maybe you want to reinstall it (along with the moz plugin)
after removing it.(my 2nd reply today with that sort of suggestion -
other java).
And check out if you're using pulse audio - maybe a conflict with VLC -
I'm still too new to linux to have a complete knowledge of a lot of
stuff...
