Hi,
I've been having this problem for months and it's driving me crazy:
Hotmail is extremely slow to load with Firefox. Most of the time, when
I try to enter the account, read an email, change folders, or any other
operation, the system tries for several seconds and then returns a "the
connection was reset" errror message. I have always to try multiple
times until it goes through. This happens both with Firefox under
Suse and under Windows XP, on two different machines. I have a fast
internet connection so that is not the problem. Can anyone help?

thanks a lot.

That's a pretty old version of Firefox, lots of things have improved.
1) Make sure that JavaScript is enabled
2) Make sure that you are loading all images.
3) Try it with AdBlock. disabled, shouldn't make a difference,
I use AdBlock and it is set to suppress ads not just hide them.

If it works some days and fails on other days it could be flash movies
in ads. Since I have ads suppressed I wouldn't have any idea.

Hotmail likes to use JavaScript for links and redirect links, I think.

I have a redirect remover in place http://akaxeen.tyllo.de/?page=rdr
and don't see anything specific related to hotmail so don't think it hurts.
See my webpage for five major exemptions in addition to suggestion
that come with the extension.

I would definitely upgrade Firefox for security issues.

Thanks for the reply. I just installed 2.0 and the problem is still
there. No sign of improvement.

It is (and it was)

What does this mean?

This I didn't have. I have now installed it but it seems to make things
even slower!

ps.
if this is any help, the message I always get while Firefox is stuck on
hotmail is:

Waiting for by122fd.bay122.hotmail.msn.com...

Hi Eric,
Just saw your reply and I think the solution for #2 matches the
message from hotmail.com for
"Waiting for by122fd.bay122.hotmail.msn.com..."
because that would be a 3rd party (different domain) image or cookie.
Use of AdBlock would probably also help once set up.

Do check out #5 redirect remover. Didn't mean #3 for you to
install AdBlock if you did not have it, but it is something you'll not
regret -- disable it for now so that you can check things out on
the same basis, sorry about that.
Tools, Add-ons (prior to 2.0 was Extensions), select AdBlock,
right click on Adblock, disable (for now),

For #2 Tools, Options, Content, [x] load images automatically
also check this as an option was removed from Fx2
type about:config on the location bar
Filter on: permissions.default.image
1 Allow all images to load, regardless of origin. (Default)
(formerly was network.image.imageBehavior)
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Permissions.default.image
Note: The web developer extension (if installed) can change
this option, and it is buried in sub menus so you could see this
get reset in the future by accidental use.

Tool, Options, Privacy, make sure you are accepting cookies.

If you are still having problems there would be anti-virus and
pop up blockers to check out how they interact.

I hate to have to say this about anyone, but be very leery about
replies from Garth. He is trying to tell you to use something else
for email instead of hotmail.com, which is definitely a troll response.

Thanks again but still no luck. I tried everything you suggest but see
no changes.
Could it be javascript maybe ? To answer your points:
I installed redirect remover.

I did disable Adblock already.

Done now, still no changes.

Did already.

I don't have a clue what to do then...

I use MS Outlook for my mail, I have a Hotmail account, and Outlook
processes it much slower than it does my ISP email account. I figured
that's just the way it is when accessing http mail through a mail
client. But, I am a novice with these kinds of mail/newsgroup programs
and don't know if that is necessarily so. Maybe a longer and more
complete description of your problem would draw some response from those
who know more than I.

Just as a slight point of clarification, there is no such thing as 'HTTP
mail'. You may access different Web mail services on-line through the HTTP
[Hyper-Text Transfer Protocol] protocol, but when you access such services
through an e-mail client, you access it /via/ TCP-IP, just like you would
any other mail service . . . except that, unlike most mail services, Hotmail
(like Netscape Mail used to be) can only be accessed through a specific
client because it uses a non-standard protocol/protocol implementation.

Time was that Hotmail could only 'officially' be accessed thro' OE (tho'
there were various pieces of software, such as Hotpops, that would allow you
to access it through any client); can it now be accessed thro' Outlook as well?

I'm guessing that the slowness has to do with server load. Well, at least
if you -- and your recipients -- are receiving messages in a timely fashion.
. . .

/b.
