I had Google as the search engine on my start page, but it has changed
to Chambers(UK). Why has this happened, and is there anything I can do
about it?

Have you downloaded or updated some other software? I updated
something yesterday (offhand can't remember the name) and found that
it had changed the default browser to something other than Google.
Sorry for the vagueness, but the caffeine hasn't reached the
brain-cell yet.

What search engine is selected in the search bar (in the top right
corner)? The home page now uses whatever search engine the search bar is
set to.

The start page (about:home)now uses whatever is set as the search
provider in the search box, which normally lives in a toolbar. If
you want them to use different search providers, try the Keyword Search
extension,
<https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/keyword-search/>. Its
description doesn't say anything about about:home, but according to
its author it will let you change the about:home search provider. (I
haven't tried it.)

Yes, that does bring up Google, but the FF start page remains as before.
