As far as I know the default search engine in Firefox has been Google.
However I get one in once in a while where it is something has taken the
default. Under "manage search engines" Google is quite often already at the
top. If it's not I move it to the top, but no matter what the original
"other one" still defaults.
And now I've come across one that doesn't even have Google on the list.
How can I get Google back on that one and how do I make it default on *any*
machine that has something else as default?
Right now I'm talking about 3.6.12 but I've noticed that problem in much
older versions too.

There is a setting in about:config called
"browser.search.selectedEngine". It records the last engine you used.
If you shut down Firefox after using Wikipedia in the search box, that
should appear the next time you launch Firefox.

Not on my list or the other one in question. My "search" list is

browser.search.defaultenginename;Google
browser.search.log;false
browser.search.openintab;false
browser.search.order.1;Google
browser.search.order.2;Yahoo
browser.search.param.yahoo-fr;moz35
browser.search.param.yahoo-fr-cjkt;moz35
browser.search.param.yahoo-fr-ja;mozff
browser.search.searchEnginesURL;https://addons.mozilla.org/%LOCALE%/%
APP%/search-engines/
browser.search.suggest.enabled;true
browser.search.update;true
browser.search.update.log;false
browser.search.updateinterval;6
browser.search.useDBForOrder;true

Mine is OK but the other one defaults to Yahoo even thought his
defaultenginename is set to Google as is the search order.
The problem is that Google isn't even on his dropdown list.
So obviously it has to use search.order 2 (Yahoo)

I need to know how to get Google back on the list.

That's the way it is set. But Yahoo is coming up anyway.
Google is not on the dropdown list.
How do I get it back?

Even better is that you can use the search form from any page and
create your keyword shortcut (builtin) with a keyword of your own
choosing, or to add your own search engine to the search bar.

These methods won't always work, like for instance if the url of the
page does not change in the location bar when you view different pages
because everything was done with javascript, but they usually work.

To create a keyword shortcut, right-click in the search form where
you would make your entries, then choose "Make a keyword for this Search..."
(it doesn't even have to be a search).

To add a search engine you the extension
