I recently tried to log into a banking account and repeatedly got
"invalid password." Since typing into a password field doesn't
show the text you're typing, and many modern keyboards (including
my wireless keyboard) don't have a caps lock indicator light, it
took me until I gave up and started to do some other work involving
typing text before I realized the problem.

I tried searching for "caps lock" in add-ons and found nothing,
then a Google search turned up bug 259059, which seems to be
what I'm talking about:

https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=259059

Unfortunately I can't tell from the lengthy discussion whether
anything has been done about this. Is there an add-on that
addresses this issue, or possibly a setting to allow me to see
what I'm typing one letter at a time like on cell phones?

Thanks for any suggestions...

Is there some reason it has to be part of FF? There are certainly programs
which run in the background and display such status items onscreen for the
various lock functions. What program you need will depend on your OS but
there are a number of them out there.

You can turn off the Caps Lock key entirely with SharpKeys at
http://www.randyrants.com/2004/03/sharpkeys_11_of.html

I always turn off Caps Lock and Insert, two keys I never want to
use, but often press accidentally.

Also, there are third-party programs that let you see what you are
typing in the password field. Sorry, I don't remember any names, but a
Google search can turn some up.

Well, it doesn't necessarily need to be in FireFox, although other
programs that use passwords (including Windows logon) warn me of Caps
lock. I have found a program called Keyboard LEDs that at least
gives me an indication in the lower right corner of the screen. I
just thought that for a password entry or basically any time I can't
see what I'm typing it would be nice if the indication were a little
more "in my face."

I know this doesn't directly answer your question, since I don't know
the specific answer to it, but since I sometimes accidentally hit the
caps lock (or num lock or scroll lock) key, I have "Toggle Keys" turned
on so that a tone is played when I press them (turn them on or off). If
you're interested, in Windows 7 you can turn it on via Control Panel,
Ease of Access Center, Make the keyboard easier to use, Turn on Toggle
Keys. It won't help you if caps lock is ALREADY on, but it will help
you know if you accidentally turn it on.

[Snippy]

My dear wife had that trouble on her computer so she took measures to
ensure she didn't accidentally press the Caps lock key.

A small blob of Blutack on the key to which she affixed a drawing pin with
the pin pointing up. :-/

I only heard exclamations a couple of times, thereafter all seemed sorted.

It's a bit cumbersome but one option is to open the on-screen keyboard,
which is located in the "ease of access" folder in Win7. This clearly
displays the on-off status of CAPS and you can toggle it (and you can
minimize it too). According to what I see in front of me you can also
have it start automatically at log-on.

Well, I'd like to thank all for suggestions. In the end I found
"show my password 2.0" which will help in those situations when
I sem to have trouble logging in. I also still think it would
be nice to have Firefox do something about the "bug." I'm not
ready to disable my caps lock key yet, since I occasionally use
it when entering data that needs to be in upper case (although
probably not as often as I hit it by mistake). If I do decide
to disable it, I found that the Keyboard LEDs program for Windows
also allows me to click caps lock on/of from its settings menu,
so I could use caps lock albeit awkwardly if I had to.

You either teach people to treat you with dignity and respect, or you don't. This means you are partly responsible for the mistreatment that you get at the hands of someone else.

Accidentally selecting a wrong (international) keyboard layout
can have the same effect. If it happens to me, I start Notepad
to check the result of my typing efforts, and in no time I've
found the culprit without having to install more software.
