I haven't noticed any popovers in 99.9% of the sites I go to daily.

Must be different sites.

Maybe one of the popup settings in your about:config changed. My are all
default.

With NoScript, Disconnect, and ABP on this annoying and obnoxious
popover does not show at my end.

Unless there is one site that you must visit that requires Java, I would
disable it or remove it.

I do not have java on either of my computers and have noticed no
negative effects.

I understand your word of warning all too well but apart from sites that
might require the Java plugin I also run several programs that are
dependent on JRE.
As you see above popovers have not caused any nuisance on
<http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-a-popover.htm#> at my end.

Ah, a link!

Like I said I don't see those on 99.9% of the sites I go to, and if I
do, never go there again.

That one never finished loading.

I cannot share your reservations regarding NoScript at all. With the
NoScript Icon in the Add-On Bar (thanks to the Classic Theme Restorer)
and the NoScript Switch ("Temporarily allow all this page") in the
Navigation Toolbar I am as flexible and quick as anyone can be in
switching the tool on and off.

And none for me with FF 42.0b2. And of course I _HAVE_ a
javascript-blocking add-on as all right-thinking security-conscious
annoyance-avoiding user does. I didn't bother to try switching NS off since
I never do that on an untrusted unknown site.

I agree. Popovers are on most sites now and are becoming increasingly annoying.
News sites are especially fond of them.
Only way I have been able to not show them is to disable JS.

I get one if I scroll down on the presenting page. I use ublock but it
doesn't block the popover. I have the prefbar and unchecked javascript
and it doesn't come up at all after several tries.

My apologies, I was a bit quick on the reply. I know what you mean now
with Pop-Overs, I see them here and there, usually in the corner of the
window, trying to get me to answer some poll or something. I run
NoScript, so I don't see them much (I see none on WiseGeek) but I do see
them more and more, and YES, they are annoying!

Off to read the rest of the thread, maybe someone has a better idea on
how to block them.

Best Regards,

I don't have an answer for blocking them per se, but if you are using
uBlock, you can left click it's icon and then click the little medicine
dropper by "on this page". As you drag the mouse over the pop-over,
various parts will turn red. You sometimes have to move the mouse to
various corners or edges to get the whole pop-over red, but once you do
just left click. A window will open at the lower right asking if you
want to block or not. Just click OK and the offending pop-over will
disappear. If your screen still looks like it has a semi-transparent
film over it, that is part of the pop-over. Some will have this---some
won't. If you have it, just repeat the blocking process but this time
select the whole page. After a while you will be able to recognize if
that film is there when the pop-over first opens. Then you can skip the
first step and just select the whole page to block. Careful though, as
you don't want to wind up blocking the page content by mistake. That's
why I use the two step process! Now, you will be able to visit that page
repeatedly with no more pop-overs! I know it's not a great solution, but
it's all we have for now.

AdBlockPlus Element Hiding Helper will also do the same thing using
"rules" if you are using ABP.
