I'd like to know why it's there and how to dump it?
TIA
RF
That one is easy and is done by use of the View menu and use of the
Toolbar item to select which bars are visible. Toggle off the Bookmarks
bar, since you are not using it. Or you can add frequently used
bookmarks on that bar by dragging one down from the URL bar to the
bookmarks bar.

Kernel Restore reported BSOD use by Major Error to msg the enemy!
Thank you Ron but the one I want to get rid of appears to have no name.
What shows on my v 2.0.0.9 is Navigation, Bookmarks and FirePhisch. It's
the blank one
between Navigation and Bookmarks I want rid of. I tried running my
cursor over it to see
if I could drag it away but that didn't work either.
I regularly use the Bookmarks bar.

couple of "hints" needed here...
1) does that "toolbar that isn't" have any clickable markings, in the
centre or at one end?
2) can you "grab-and-drag" any border, to re-size the bar?
3) can you post a screenshot for us to see what you are getting ?
4) have you tried disabling any extensions you have (or tried FF in
safe-mode) to see if that is the problem?
you can also take a look at these URLs to see if they offer a solution
(after the motto "a grey bar is a grey bar is a grey bar)

No

No

It's a plain grey strip slightly narrower than the Navigation bar.
Otherwise empty.
When I go to View | Toolbars | Customize, a window pops open and
"Bookmarks
Toolbar Items" appears on the left end of that empty bar. The window
shows items,
like printers, that can be dragged and dropped on the bars. I did just
that and when
I dropped them onto the empty bar, they appeared in the Navigation bar.

Safe mode? Not even the Firefox Help file knows what that is ;-)

No, these are not like mine, which is right under the Navigation bar.

Thanks again.

Start>>Programs>>Mozilla Firefox>>Mozilla Firefox Safe Mode
This will start Firefox with extensions disabled, and gives us an idea
if this phantom toolbar is being added by a misbehaving extension.
It sounds rather like the Bookmarks Toolbar, with no Bookmarks Toolbar
folder selected. Try View>>Toolbars, and and uncheck Bookmarks Toolbar.
Alternatively, open Bookmarks Manager, and set a Bookmarks Toolbar folder.
But you say you use the bookmarks toolbar regularly? Hm.
If Safe Mode does not change this, try creating a new profile.
Lee
You just described the Bookmarks Toolbar, and in customize
you could move that wording on it to the customize box and
you would see nothing there even in customize and you would
see "bookmarks" as text only in the customize box, drag it
back to the toolbar just so you have what is expected.
If you do not want to display any bookmarks
use View, Toolbars, (uncheck) Bookmarks bar
If you do want to display bookmarks (and/or bookmark) folders
on your bookmarks toolbar, they are in your bookmarks in the
folder named "Personal Toolbar Folder" you are either missing\
the folder, it is empty or something changed your option to another name.
type about:config into the Location Bar (address bar)
filter: personal
You should see an item as
custtoolbar.personal_toolbar_folder defined as string and probably without a value
meaning it would be the default value "Personal Toolbar Folder"
So do you have bookmarks Ctrl+B, do you have a Personal Toolbar Folder"
and only one of them.

HTH,

Firefox Custom: http://www.mvps.org/dmcritchie/firefox/firefox.htm
Lee and David - it most certainly sounds (from the latest description)
as if the OP has an *extended* (for lack of a better word) bookmarks
toolbar.
As you have both given advice on this (re-formatting it), maybe we
should wait to see if the OP has any success!

If you really want to save space check this:

To save space on my small laptop I have really
put an effort into minimizing all space waste :-)

My Firefox tweaks: http://osterud.name/firefox.html
I think I know what he's talking about now, the tabs themselves are lower
that the background. So if you have say two tabs the empty space to the
right is part of the space above the tabs, and it is a gray background.
The toolbars are generally blue or blue gray but depends default theme
which probably takes something on from the operating system.
I had the .tab-close-button with a height of 19 it is now 14 to match the tabs.
I use the one close button on the right side.
So this is what I have in userChrome.css -- the font size on tabs is 80%
.tabbrowser-tabs *|tab {
height: 14px !important;
min-width: 8px !important }
.tab-close-button, .tab-close-button-placeholder {height: 14px !important; padding:0px; margin:0px;}
.tabs-closebutton { height:14px !important; }
Huge thanks to everyone for the great support and my apologies for my
confusion.
The problem was because of my confusion between what I now know as the
Bookmarks toolbar
and the bar that forms when I make multiple tabs. These usually form a
bar that extends the complete
width of the browser and that I mistakenly took as the Bookmark bar.
I used David's suggestion
View, Toolbars, (uncheck) Bookmarks bar
and that "mysterious" grey bar just disappeared.
Thanks again guys.
Without you I'd have to spend all my time trying to figure FireFox :-)

Very interesting and useful Lars.
Tak bra. :-)

> Very interesting and useful Lars.
It was actually a reaction to MS removing all forms of customization
from IE7 (in IE6 I could put all on one line), so when I found out
that FF could be customized REALLY HEAVY then there was no stopping
me. It's kind of hard adjusting it to FF3.0pre, but looks OK now...
yeah, well! sometimes we do get a brainwave and then, things just seem
to "blurt out" of their own making! *lol*
glad to see it's working as you want it to... and hope you managed to
learn a little in the process
reg
Yes, it's a bit embarrassing when the item we are looking for ends up
just under our noses ;-)
Thanks again

Yup! FF is amazing in its almost unlimited capacity for adaptation.
Unfortunately, for dummies like me, it's full of holes for falling into ;-)

I have many long night "fiddling" with the "userChrome.css" file :-)
Sometimes you have to try and test and try and test a millon times!
