I am using Firefox 85.0.

I just noticed that the bookmark star no longer turns blue when I visit
a bookmarked site.

No, it is not because I am visiting a slightly different link than the
one that I have bookmarked...

Has anyone else observed this and found out why?

This happened to me. There was a difference between the site that was
bookmarked and the site I ended up on. The bookmarked site was http://
while the site I ended up on wwas https://.

Surely that's a good thing as https is the secure version of the site. I
believe some hosts direct visitors to the secure version of the site if
the domain owner requests it.

I've had sites bookmarked as blah-blah-blah.com and they show up as blah-blah-blah.com/
And the slash screws up the bookmark.

Yes, it is a good thing. I was just trying to explain to the original
poster why they might click on a bookmark and end up on the site but not
see the blue star.

Yep.
Right click all the bookmarks that don't turn blue and change the
properties from http: to https: and they will all turn blue.
But as long has it switches to https does it really matter what colour
it is.
Have fun changing them all. :-)
