I have hundreds of folders so it would be nice to know there is a quick method. :(

There are only 10 types of people in the world: Those who understand binary, and those who don't.
If you mean the Bookmarks Sidebar (Ctrl+B)
click on each of these to collapse them
Bookmarks Toolbar
Bookmarks Men
Unfiled or Unsorted Bookmarks -- though I don't think this one can have folders
When you expand those again all of the contained folders should be collapsed.
Does not appear to work for Organize Bookmarks.

HTH,
David McRitchie, extensions I use are briefly documented on my site
Firefox Custom: http://www.mvps.org/dmcritchie/firefox/firefox.htm
.
Thx but that doesn't work. As soon I expand the root folder all subfolders that were expanded before
still remain expanded. I even tried to export the bookmark into html file, delete the sqlite file
then import it, but settings are stored in the html file. What a pain. There reallly should be
"expand/collapse all" right click menu option.
If I can figure out how I expanded all the folders that might give me a clue.
Try the hot keys that Thunderbird uses to collapse/expand tree views. The
'*' and '\' keys.

Doesn't work. I found a way of collapsing the current folder's folders by selecting sort. When you
sort all folders directly under parent folder get closed. You have to do it for each sub-folder though.
Tried your method about 8 times and that failed, but then so was my suggestion of collapsing
each of the three main folders. Was about to post that and now your method using
sort worked three times in a row.
Even tried restarting Firefox to see if that would collapse them -- it did not.
Sorting bookmarks doesn't bother me in itself, as my personal bookmarks
are specifically renamed for sorting, and one bookmark(let) amongst the
folders is protected from being mixed up by bookmark separators. But
sorting bookmarks can take a very long time, perhaps because of keywords.
Glad you posted and answered your own question.
Just looked back at version 2 to see if there was an all encompassing
collapse/expand, there wasn't. But the [+] and [-] sure are a lot easier
to read than the hollow/filled rotated triangles of version 3.
