Any suggestions as to how I get back to a fast FF, which it was before
the above action? Thanks.

Well, this did not disappear from the group here. However, I saw your
second post first, so best to hold the discussion there.

From Firefox Release notes for 1.5:
http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/releases/1.5.0.3.html
On Intel-based Macintosh computers, PowerPC-only binary extensions do
not work unless users upgrade to an Intel-native or Universal version or
turn on Rosetta. To turn on Rosetta, click on the Firefox icon, click
"Get Info" and then check the "Run Under Rosetta" box.

I don't lknow why this is happening, but did you try clicking the
Rosetta option in Get Info, and see what it does?
Also, did you try reinstalling Flash?
Lee
According to the Apple.com support section at
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/8496.html
"On an Intel-based Macintosh, Universal applications may run more slowly
if they have been set to open using Rosetta, technology that allows
software designed for PowerPC to run on Intel-based computers. To change
this setting, select the application’s icon and choose File > Get Info.
If the “Open using Rosetta” checkbox in the General pane of the info
window is selected, deselect it."

Did Stephen not say that the option was unchecked in Get Info?
Lee
About Flash. I wouldn't know where to find it to delete, or where to
find it to reinstall.
See my reply to Lee. I did read that bit at Apple support, but at the
time, because I had already unchecked the box to no effect, I disregarded.
Go to the Adobe web site to find flash:
http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlash
And yeah, there are different versions for Intel and PPC Macs!!! I bet
that's it, you installed the PPC flash player on an Intel!!
Whenever I've installed a new flash version, I've just installed over
the top, but since you have the wrong version, it might be well to
uninstall first. Here is a link to the unistaller:
http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=tn_14157&sliceId=2
Download both the uninstaller and the installer for the Intel
version.Close all browsers, then run the unistaller. Then run the
installer, and see if that clears up the problem.

Let us know how FF is behaving, after you have run it for a while.

There is flash test page at the adobe site, but mlb.com is very flash
intensive.
I am curious as to how you got the wrong version installed. I assume
you went to the page, and got the Missing Plugin warning. What happened
next?
Lee
Hi all!
I'm having a similar problem and I think that the cause might be the Flash
plugin.
I'm running Firefox 2.0.0.11 on Windows XP SP2 on an ancient IBM ThinkPad 600.
Firefox crashes consistently when I access http://www.java.com/ (which redirects
to http://www.java.com/en). There seems to be an applet on that webpage which
requires the Flash plugin. After the page has been found and is (I guess) about
half-way through loading, I get the Windows error that Firefox has encountered
a problem and has to close, whereupon I have to then allow Windows to go through
all the rigmarole associated with sending the problem report to Micro$oft,
{as if anyone there could care less if Firefox is crashing on Windows).
However, the parts of the error message that I can understand seem to point
to Flash as the culprit (NPSWF32.DLL). On my Windows system, the file is to
be found in the "C:\WINDOWS\system32\Macromed\Flash" folder.
I have now uninstalled and re-installed the Flash Player twice, with no success.
The crash still happens on laoding the URL in question.
Actually, I have subscribed to this newsgroup because I don't think it's a
bug in Firefox: I think it's more likely a problem with the Flash plugin,
so I haven't yet tried to find out if it has been reported at BugZilla.
Also, my ThinkPad 600 is coming up for its 10th birthday, so the problem
may actually be that I need more RAM than is available. (I already have
the maximum 256MB installed - the TP600 won't take any more). Furthermore,
although the problem also occurs on my desktop machine (which has 4GB RAM),
it doesn't crash Firefox, but the applet takes forever to load.
I try to keep my Java installation as up-to-date as possible, but it seems
that I'll have to find some other way of downloading and installing it if
the main download page continues to crash Firefox; and it all seems due to
a demo applet of a chess game which has appeared on the page only very
recently.
So, I really don't have any suggestions about Rosetta; I don't know anything
about Apple computers, anyway. However, I think the OP's problem may well
be due to some bug in the Flash plugin. I note that he was trying to run
a web-based game; he didn't state exactly what game it was. It may well be
the same one that is crashing Firefox on my machine.
I'm also going to check at the Adobe support site to see if there have been
any bug reports with the latest Flash player plugin for Mozilla/Firefox, and,
if I do find anything, I'll report it back here.
Thanks for reading and best regards to all,

Stephen's problem relates solely to Mac OS X, with different flash
versions for PPC and Intel processors. Since your problem is on the
Windows platform, it is not related. May I suggest that you restate
your problem in a separate thread, rather then tacking it on here. You
will get much better support then you would by including it in an
unrelated thread.
Lee
OK, fair enough... I just thought that it might be that the latest
version of Flash (for whatever platform) might somehow be misbehaving
with Firefox, so, even though the platform is different, perhaps the
error message might indicate that Flash is, in fact, the problem.
Sorry if I offended anyone. :-)
Thanks and regards

You have not offended at all, I would just like to see you get the best
support possible, not distracted by a different problem.

No it isn't. Shockwave and Shockwave Flash are different things.
Go here:
http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/welcome/
You will see a test for Shockwave, and a test for Flash.
Does your FF pass both tests?
Most people in most uses do not need Shockwave. Did you really need it
fo these games? I don't know. Since Adobe has not created an Intel Mac
version after all this time, it must be a pretty low priority for them.

Okay, I did my own test. I installed the Shockwave player. If I open
under Rosetta, its available, if under native mode, it isn't.
I would have thought that Adobe would have addressed this by now.
Looking at this, I guess the slow down may have been coincidence. I do
see FF running a little slower under Rosetta. So, just use Rosetta if
you really need this plugin, which is very rarely required.
