My problem is that I have the pc speakers and a wireless sound system,
while I'm sitting at the PC I use the pc speakers but then if I go into
another room I switch to my wireless speakers, to do this I change the
default device in 'Sounds & Audio Devices Properties', close down
Firefox and then start Firefox again.
It's a real pain! Is there a way that I can just change this directly in
Firefox?
Thanks

Are you speaking of web sites with audio? Firefox doesn't have any
preferences for sound output.

Don't be a fonted, it's just type casting
I'm guessing that Firefox (or any browser) uses the OS system sound
settings on startup. If FF is started and then you change the system
sound settings how is FF to know? I know of no setting to affect that
without restarting FF.
There are some programs (Winamp comes to mind) in which you can select
the Windows sound devices dynamically and have the change in effect
without restarting the program.

What the OP is talking about should be strictly controlled by the OS, should
it not?
AFAIK, the audio player outputs to an audio device or driver (and, under
Windows, if you're not already using ASIO, you should be; a free ASIO driver
is available at <http://asio4all.com/>), which, in turn, interfaces with the
kernel (OS); if so, then the kernel interfaces with the hardware.
IOW (and IIUC), changing hardware (in-built speakers /v/ wireless speakers)
shouldn't affect anything earlier in the chain.

First, I'm assuming the OP is using FF to serve up Internet-based
streaming audio such as a radio station or such.
The key is that the OP said that to change to the wireless speakers he
changes the default sound device setting in Control Panel's Sounds and
Audio Devices. Hence, he is changing how the OS handles sound but
Firefox doesn't know that until it is closed and restarted.
With Winamp (and some other audio programs), there is an internal
setting that changes the audio system device that program uses without
needing to change the system default at the OS level. I use this in two
ways.
1. On my laptop which is usually connected to my stereo system I have
two sound systems: the laptop's built-in one and an external USB
Soundblaster which is what connects to the stereo. When I travel the OS
senses that the USB card is not there and defaults the system sound
driver to the built-in one. When I plug back in to the USB device I
have Winamp set to use that so it doesn't matter what the system default
is set to.
2. On my office system I have the motherboard audio system and a
Soundblaster card. The speakers are driven by the SB card. The output
of the MB audio goes to an external integrated amp which I use solely to
drive headphones. So, when the wife's in bed I put on the headphones
and switch Winamp to use the MB audio system. Sound in headphones, no
sound from speakers.
Ok, I know, more than anyone ever wanted to know! :-[
