I think other people have mentioned this behaviour before but thought i
would mention it again.

about 6 to 9 months ago I gave up on Mozilla Firefox for the simple
reason of it not opening mail to links in Thunderbird.

Before people make suggestions like making Thunderbird default program
in Windows etc I've checked on all that. Vivaldi and Opera have no
trouble in opening mailto links in Thunderbird.

If I set the options in Firefox to "always ask" when a mail to link is
clicked on I get a box with Thunderbird at the top and I believe Gmail
and Yahoo underneath. Oddly that there is an icon for Yahoo and Gmail
but not Thunderbird. Anyways clicking on Thunderbird in the list
produces an error message saying its not listed as a default program etc
and I start all over again.

Firefox is a good browser but there are others that can do just as well
arguably better with more advanced options.

Its a pity that the mailto links on my Windows 7 computer/s don't work
in Firefox.

Did you check Thunderbird's setting at Tools > Options > Advanced >
General > System Integration, and confirm that "Always check to see if
Thunderbird is the default mail client on startup" is enabled and click
the "Check Now" button?

I had the problem a while ago. I had to go into Firefox preferences and
specify the application to use for mailto: links.

Having Thunderbird configured as the default email client wasn't sufficient.
