I've tried this several times since I saw it on a feed. I always get
"We've encountered an error. Please try your request again later."

Using
Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-GB; rv:1.9.1.2) Gecko/20090730
SUSE/3.5.2-1.1 Firefox/3.5.2

Is this supposed to work with Linux?

Seems to work here...no error messages as you describe above.

openSUSE 11.1 with FF 3.0.14.

Just installed FF 3.5.3 yesterday and so have no add-ons installed in it
yet; again no problems with the web page and it told me I didn't have
any plugins installed. However, under extensions, the Beagle Indexer
1.1.0 was shown but listed as incompatible with 3.5.3. Clicked Uninstall
and restarted FF. Add-on window now showed "1 new add-on has been
installed" and Beagle is still enabled.

Going to leave it there for more exploration tomorrow....

Did you make sure Java Script is enabled for this site? Same thing
happened to me until I realized my script plugin was blocking the site ...

JS enabled. Not running NoScript. ABP not blocking anything

I updated FF to 3.5.3 from Mozilla repo.
On restart it told me that Flash plugin needed update.
Updated flash plugin from 10.0 r15 to 10.0 r32

Tried plugin check again. I still get:
Plugin Finding Service Error

We've encountered an error. Please try your request again later.

Now on
Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-GB; rv:1.9.1.3) Gecko/20090909
SUSE/3.5.3-3.2 Firefox/3.5.3

I have these plugins:

Silverlight Plug-In
File name: libmoonloaderxpi.so
3.0.40624.0

Java(TM) Plug-in 1.6.0_15
File name: libnpjp2.so

OpenSC Signer plugin
File name: opensc-signer.so

DjView-4.3

File name: nsdejavu.so

Xine Plugin
File name: xineplugin.so
Xine Plugin version 1.0.1, (c) The Xine Project.

Shockwave Flash
File name: libflashplayer.so
Shockwave Flash 10.0 r32

Helix DNA Plugin: RealPlayer G2 Plug-In Compatible
File name: nphelix.so
Helix DNA Plugin: RealPlayer G2 Plug-In Compatible version 0.4.0.4434
built with gcc 3.4.6 on Oct 1 2008

All work OK apart from xine which often crashes FF, but I've got used to
it ;-)

Guess it really means if Mozilla Firefox can detect an out of date plugin it will mark it as
"Update Now" rather than "Up to Date" or "Research". As far as Firefox is
concerned there is nothing that it can fix for you so you are up to date as far as
their checking goes.

In the notes on the Mozilla webpage, for the future, plug-ins will be automatically updated.
(not yet ready for prime time, but we at least get help with what can be seen).

When the following was installed, Sun installation notes or message indicated that previous versions
after U12 would be uninstalled
Java(TM) Platform SE 6 U15
Next Generation Java Plug-in 1.6.0_15 for Mozilla browsers 1.6.0.15
Sun probably has not marked SE 6 U15 to be updated yet, but while at Sun.com
-- http://www.java.com/en/download/index.jsp --
saw and installed Se 6 U16 and now Sun's after installation message indicates that you will
automatically receive updates.

So then went to Minefield and when I brought it up and it opened up to
http://www.java.com/en/download/inc/windows_upgrade_xpi.jsp
with upload button to download from Sun.

Got the same update message for Shiretoko which will become Firefox 3.5.4
only difference was the install button was hard to read (blue on blue). And
soon after Shiretoko just updated to 3.5.5pre

Firefox 3.5.4 is currently scheduled for Wed Oct 21 (in the past that meant 3-6 PM
Pacific time).

If downloading Java (Free downloads) directly from Sun watch out for installing Yahoo toolbar.
