For example, 'Save copy' does not work.

Windows XP SP3, Firefox 12, Adobe X with latest update.

I don't know if it is Mozilla's or Adobe's problem, but I also see this
problem.

I find the problem most frequently when I try to save a bank statement
from the bank's secure website. Usually I can save the first document,
but all documents attempts after that fail.

Base on the workaround I believe the problem is caused by Adobe and
possibly something to do with the security in Adobe.

The work around: After each document save, open the Windows Task Manager
and force the Adobe program to close. You do not have to close Firefox.

I have noticed that many times there are two incidences of Adobe
running, but both close when you terminate one.

First off, please include the basic issue in the body of the message,
helps for search purposes, thanks.

Can you provide a URL where this problem occurs, I don't see this on
some sites with a PDF download.

XP Pro SP3 and latest Adobe Reader plugin and application. I know there
was a security update last week I think but don't know if that could be
the problem.

You can also try the plugin check to see if everything is up to date:

I have found some websites that offer a PDF for reading will disable the
"save" feature if the PDF is copywrite protected. The publishing site
Booksie is like that.

I prefer this application. Foxit Reader. IMO it is much better that Adobe.

"Foxit Reader"

I can not speak for *your* banking sites but I do not have the problem
that you two describe with my banking site. Or any other sites.

Add my vote for the free Foxit reader. I've never found a site or a pdf
file that Foxit couldn't/didn't handle, requiring the use of the free
Adobe Reader.

If you choose to use Foxit Reader's Firefox plug-in, the recent update
to the Foxit reader includes a much improved plug-in that loads faster
and doesn't seem to lock up, the way the older version occasionally did.

I have found that a "hidden" PDF dialog is causing a stall of the PDF
application. Sometimes the window is just buried behind the current
window(s) and can be found by minimizing the windows one at a time.

I have it, but the window always opens showing only 1/4 page or so and I
have to adjust both the size of the window itself AND the zoom level. Is
there some secret way of always having it open up to whatever size is
required to show a single page at a reasonable magnification WITHOUT
ADDITIONAL ADJUSTMENT? The Edit/Preferences thing doesn't seem to offer
anything useful. Note: I never want ANYTHING to open in full-page mode
ever.

I've never been able to get any pdf add-on to open a file within FF
itself -- they either save the file somewhere or open a new application
window to read the file AFTER saving it somewhere. Minor nuisance, but
it's existed as long as I've been using FF, maybe even Netscape :-(

opens fine within the browser no problem - ubuntu, though, adobe 9.5 w/
FF 12.
Not full screen, tool bar works.

Are you referring to Adobe or Foxit?

I use Foxit Reader (free version), includes FF plug-in. Most of the
time, I just Save and Open outside of FF, though.

I meant full screen :-(

Both. The adobe plugin just offers to save the file and then opens it
in a separate window. I think xpdf did the same thing, but that was a
long time ago.

The adobe plugin kept telling me that the .pdf file was wrong in some
generic way, although if I saved the file and then opened it with
acroread it opened perfectly well. At some point I just stopped using
acroread ever in favor of foxit.

Although both open files the way any sensible person wants to see them,
Acroread takes a long time to open and xpdf prints funny. I'd REALLY
like to know how to open foxit so I could read pdf files without
resizing. What possible benefit can opening in a tiny window provide?

With the Firefox - Foxit reader/plug-in combination, here's what I've
learned by trial, error, and experience:

Plug-in behavior obeys whatever preference settings you establish in the
free-standing reader.

Even if and when you check the box entitled "Display PDF in browser" in
the File Association section of the Preferences list, the plug-in will
not appear unless you manually go to the "Check for Updates Now" drop
down from the Help button and manually select and install the plug-in.
In other words, the plugin does not automatically install as part of the
main reader's installation (or update) file. It is a Foxit Reader add-on.

Many Foxit Reader updates are really automated full deletions of the
previously installed version and installation of the newer version,
which means the previously installed Firefox Plug-in is likely
uninstalled along with the older version of the Reader. So, after an
update, always check the update tool immediately after doing an update
to see if the Firefox Plugin is offered for download. If so, just
download it again.

Set the default display size in the Page Display section of the
Preferences, using your preference from among the drop down choices to
the right of the words, "Default Zoom:".

In your Firefox browser, go to the Applications Tab of the Options
choices, and for the entry "Foxit Reader PDF Document" select "Use Foxit
Reader Plugin for Mozilla" if it is not already the setting.

At present, Foxit offers ver. 5.3 of the free reader. As I mentioned in
a previous posting, I find it plays even nicer with Firefox than
previous versions. Good luck.

Thank you all for your responses.
Here are my responses to the comments or the questions raised:

The website is with a mutual fund and the PDF file is for a monthly
statement. The problem has been with the FFox for quite some times
during which the FFox was updated more than once. My temporary
solution has alway been switching the browser to IE only to save the
PDF file. Please note that it is not only "Save file" but also
"Pointer", etc. that does not work. My OS on which the FFox is running
is W7 Ultimate x64.

I appreciate your explanation and am saving your post in case I get the
energy to do that some day.

Of the standalone pdf readers, the only one that printed correctly to my
cheap Brother laser printer was xpdf. The others refused my scaling
instructions and printed half of an intended landscape page in portrait
mode. I can't remember whether acroread or foxit printed larger, but I
wasted several sheets of paper.

Stupid programs.
