A few days ago I could not restart Firefox because it said it was
already open. I discovered that I could delete the parent.lock file and
then I could start firefox.

Problem is that now every time I shut down Firefox (I use the X on the
top right corner as I have for years) the same thing happens and I need
to manually delete the parent.lock again.

How can I stop this from happening?

My understanding is that using the X in the top right corner is not the way
to shut down - it only closes the window. You should go to the menu bar
then File - Exit, or right click on Firefox on the task bar and then Close.
Try those and see how you go.

Did that. Same thing.

Could this be a FF 13 issue or a Windows update issue? It started
immediately after the latest W7 security update.

Thank you.
Hope so because this is a pain.

Clicking on the [X] in the top corner should be fine. If parent lock is
not going away, maybe firefox.exe is still running and something is
preventing it from closing.

Try the solutions at

I have the most recent Win7 updates on all three of my systems, with
nothing like this happening.
Does this also happen when you restart with no add-ons?

Discovered problem.
I have 2 profiles in Firefox and I use a tool I installed long ago to
start them. The utility is "Profile Manager" v1.0 beta2.
On this utility, both profiles remain locked after opening and prevent
restarting without deleting the parent.lock.

But, this only happens if I start firefox using "Profile Manager". If I
start Firefox using a normal desktop shortcut, the locked problem does
not happen.

So the problem is "Profile Manager". I am searching for an updated
version but so far have not found it.

This is the interface tool I was using:
http://www.ghacks.net/2011/01/19/firefox-profile-manager-to-be-removed-soon/
Looks like this tool is broken even though I have the latest version
available.

It's out of beta by now. The latest released version is 1.0. The is a
FTP download link in the article you mentioned above.

It's interesting to note, we have three profiles available, and the New
Profile Manager version 1.0 does show all three profiles as ticked Locked,
but in reality they are not.

I guess the NPM is reading some flag state that is not...

That is exactly what I have with the new PM v 1.0. I use 2 profiles.
It is a problem with Profile Manager and FF13. I've used Profile Manager
for years and never had this problem until I upgraded to FF 13.

I use Firefox's built-in profile manager.
Set these in the "target" field of the shortcuts

A) Start with ProfileManager

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -ProfileManager

B) Start Firefox using the profile with name "ProfileABC"

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -P "ProfileABC"

Thank you.
A) no longer works. I think FF 13 broke it.

I used to use desktop shortcuts with
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -P "ProfileABC"
until I discovered the Profile Manager utility. Now that PM is broken
I've reverted back to that older method which still works fine.

FF 13.0.1 has the same problem.
FF 13 broke the Profile manager.
According to the webpage
http://www.ghacks.net/2011/01/19/firefox-profile-manager-to-be-removed-soon/
they removed that capability.(Father knows best...)
Fortunately desktop shortcuts with
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -P "ProfileABC"
still work.

The stand alone profile manager works fine for me. I use it to start 4
different Firefox, and Thunderbird installations.

Firefox 13 has the new Reset Profile tool accessed through Help >
Troubleshooting Information (about:support).

Have you tried resetting the profile? Maybe it is corrupt.

The Profile Manager utility is not broken for me.

Thanks Jeff but I can read.

January 2001 to June 2012 is 18 months. IIRC the developers wanted to
remove it because so few people actually use PM to make for a smaller
download and that those that do use it could download a separate
package. Which means? It will still there just moved.

Panic mode can be switched off. :-)

And you have a great day.

I have Firefox 13 and 'A)' works for me.

In any Firefox version, 'A)' only works when Firefox is not already running.
I just checked this on both version 3.6 and version 13.

But if (A) only works when FF is not running that is of no value to me.
I was using profile manager to open a second or third profile while ff
is open in a different profile. Profile Manager did that very well for
me until it developed the locked profile problem a couple of days ago -
right after I had a Windows 7 security update.

So now I use (b) in desktop shortcuts (one for each profile) and this
works even if FF is open in another profile. That is the functionality
that PM lost.

File a bug report with Microsoft. It was their update that borked it.

If it's of any use at all, the linux FF versions for some time (over a
year, not sure of the version numbers) have refused to close in any way
EXCEPT the X in the upper right corner. Might be an extension or theme,
but that would seem to go way beyond what either is supposed to do.
