Didn't there used to be some way to stop Firefox new tabs from stealing
the focus - ie, opening tabs in the background. If I am opening a number
of new tabs on one page, I want to stay on that page as the tabs open,
not have the browser move to each new tab as it opens. As is, the
browser keeps moving to new pages and I have to keep moving back to the
original page.

in the address bar type in about:config and look for this entry:

browser.tabs.loadInBackground

once found, double click on it and change it to true

http://www.mozilla.org/support/firefox/options#tabs
Tools-->Options-->Tabs.
Uncheck "When I open a link in a new tab, switch to it immediately".

That works only in Mozilla 2x on my other computer. While 2x is stable
on that computer, it was not stable on this computer! Go figure. Hence,
I am on 1.5.0.9 here, in which case Peter Potamus advice is applicable.
Thx though. ;)
