I've tried literally anything and everything, but I have never been
able to watch streamed embedded WMV videos through firefox or any other
browser. IE used to be able to stream them, but for whatever reason, it
also has begun to give me the same error. The error I recieve while
trying to watch a streamed WMV video is:

"llegal Operation in Plugin
Windows Media Player Plug-in Dynamic Link Library
The plugin performed an illegal operation. You are strongly advised to
restart Navigator."

Now, I can download WMV files and play them via media player, but they
will not stream through the browser. I currently have WMP 10 and have
tried reinstalling it multiple times and even going back to WMP 9, but
no help. I have reinstalled codecs, played around with every option and
preference possible in WMP, but nothing works. Any help would be
appreciated! If more information is needed to help, just ask.

try this extension 'launchy' : https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/81/
it will help you to launch 'Windows Media Player' externally .

unfortunately, this didn't work. You cannot click on the video itself
to bring up the launchy menu once it is embedded into the browser. Even
after trying it on the link to the streaming video, I got some sort of
error that seemed to make sense. I would like to try to fix this so I
can watch these videos in firefox. Thank you for the suggestion!

Could you provide us with a website that is giving you this trouble; so
we can test it ourselves?

I just did a google search for a site that has embedded WMV videos in
it:

http://www.jet-stream.nl/samples/wmv.html

For me, I see two greyed-out and blank WM toolbars with a half-black
half-white box where the video should be playing. It's when I exit this
website that I will recieve the error that I described in my original
post.

Here is another example:
http://castellino.ca/

These are just random videos I found - I have no idea what they are (I
can't see them, of course!). I'll take a screenshot of what my window
looks like with this malfunction.

here is a screenshot of what any embedded WMV video appears as on my
browser:

Please bottom post within these newsgroups. That is place your reply
below the replied to message, like I'm doing here. Thanks

In the address bar type in about:plugins and do a search for wmv
files. What program shows up?

I tested all the players (WMP, Real & QT) at
http://www.jet-stream.nl/samples/wmv.html and they all played on
my machine. This tells me that the code is okay.

The first thing you need to do is to launch FF in safe mode.
Clear the cache and clear out all cookies. Try to play the video
again at the above website. If it plays, then you most probably
have an extension or theme that is causing the problem. Any
extension that has ad blocking or flash blocking is probably the
culprit. If it doesn't play, you probably do not have the correct
plugin or it is corrupt.

The following link provides information on what a correct install
of the plugin looks like.

I highly doubt that it is an extension/theme problem due to the fact
that I experience the same exact problem in IE. According to that link
I have all the correct plugins, and I have tried reinstalling them in
the past, with no help. I'm really at a loss right now, every possible
problem that makes sense has not been the issue.

If it jams, force it. If it breaks, it needed replacement anyway.

That's all well and good, but you did try playing the video in FF
safe mode? I would like to know what happens. Same error or
different error?

I don't usually recommend beta software but if you are having
problems with IE & FF, I recommend you download and install WMP
11. I have it and it has been very stable. By installing WMP
11, any corrupted files with the prior version will be replaced.

This gives me a M$ error message when I try to open it and immediately
closes (FF 1.5.0.5 xp sp2) (media player connectivity add on, adblock,
noscript) WMP10. I've checked for FF updates.
Works ok in IE6
Disabling the firewall makes no difference.

This one plays fine in either FF or IE

Since you say that you are having the same problem with IE, I highly
doubt that this is a FF or an IE issue, as you say you are getting the
*same* error in both browsers. A corrupt .dll file, perhaps, based on
the error message.

I would suggest, perhaps, the microsoft.public.windowsmedia.player
newsgroup, also available through google groups:
http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.windowsmedia.player

I was about to say if I should try the WMP 11 beta, that seems like a
good idea. And I will take this to the WMP newsgroup since that it
seems like this is not a FF problem anymore. I appreciate all the help!

On 01.08.2006 08:31 pm, CET - what odd quirk of fate caused matt to
generate the following:? :

before you try any intricate resolves, look at your WMP file
associations and make *sure* that they are correctly set....
open WMP from desktop or programs list
Main menu, Tools>>Options>>Fileformat

then check any *other* player's associations (especially QuickTime) to
see that they *are not* associated to WMP-files....

then check the file associations in WinExplorer (*not* IE)

and then look in FF Tools>>Options>>Downloads click the [ View & Edit
Actions ] button.... scroll down to find WMV and WMX suffixes.... make
sure that they are set to "Open with Windows Media Player" (or change it
to...)

After that, we can start getting serious...

This works fine on the first attempt. Second try (reload, entering URL in a
second tab, or using the provided retry button)brings up talkback and shuts
down FF. After shut down the same sequence. Closing the tab or the browser
also causes a crash. No common extensions with you.

Just wondering in your case if wmplayer.exe is not closing down? check
taskmanager?
All the wma I can find play correctly except this one

It's interesting to go to:

http://www.jet-stream.nl/samples/index.html

and try 'dynamic' redirection some of my associations obviously aren't
correct.

I think the reason http://www.jet-stream.nl/samples/wmv.html fails for me is
AFAICT it is opening THREE streams concurrently? windows media, quicktime
and real player and I don't have anything for playing real player.

I don't see a wma. Page info shows media as .asx. FF is using WMedia Player
plug-in. Nothing shows up in Task Manager or Process explorer.

Only the wmv and mov will play here. Others ask what I want to do with
file.
